Damien Maddockwins Walker Cup at Templemore

Templemore and District Anglers report on their Walker Cup fished on Town Lake….

19 May: Today we held our first coarse match of the year on the town park lake for the Walker Cup.
There was a great turn out of 22 anglers with some of the best fishermen in the country on show. Anglers had travelled from far and wide to participate. There were some lovely bags of fish caught even though our lake really fishes best from June onward.

Garreth cathes 19lb 3oz to win canal Open at Edenderry

Edenderry Coarse Angling Club reports on their second open match of the season fished at the weekend…

Grand canal, edenderry

Edenderry Coarse Angling Club held its second open today on the Grand Canal. We had another great turn out of anglers. Today was quite cold for the time of year and with the roach and bream with other things on their mind most anglers fished for lumps. Garreth Symth and Ron Durkin went fish for fish most of the day. I thought it was between the two of them but Alan Larkin had other ideas …. The top 4 were:

  • 1. Garreth Smyth 19lb 03oz
  • 2. Alan Larkin 16lb 13oz
  • 3. Ron Durkin 16lb 03oz
  • 4. Matthew Crowl 12lb 04oz

New members are always welcome to Edenderry Coarse Angling Club.

Nine permanent match stretches occupy the length of the Grand Canal within 15 km of Edenderry town. This section of canal corridor is unconfined by lock gates for 31 kilometres. Each stretch is permanently marked and contains a minimum of 25 pegs, spaced at 30 metre intervals. The towpaths are driveable and adjacent car parking facilities are provided. The towpaths, like the canal itself, are maintained to the highest standard by Waterways Ireland and Edenderry coarse angling club, while the angling conditions are beyond parallel. A vast number of mixed coarse fish have been stocked into the canal over the past ten years – the health and population status of which is regularly assessed.

Apart from the 262 permanent swims that have been created for the match angler on this unique fishery, a number of stretches have been prepared to cater for the pleasure fisherman and the junior angler. Included among these is the famous Edenderry Branch Line. Fished 12 months a year, this highly productive venue regularly produces catches in excess of 50lb per session. Bream, tench, roach, rudd, hybrids, carp, perch and gudgeon are the principal fish species present.

Time for a break!

A fine Corrib brownie for Gearóid

Father and son duo Daragh and Gearóid Browne (9) spent the afternoon on Lough Corrib recently; Gearóid was on the dap while dad Daragh fished wet flies in the Galcarrick Island area. Despite tempting a couple of fish to the dapped Royal Wulff Gearoid couldn’t hook one but he was happy to play and land the fish that his dad hooked on a small wet fly! The fish stayed on despite an acrobatic fight and the resulting photograph speaks a thousand words.

Brownie for Gearóid Browne

Apart from the excitement of catching and releasing a cracking wild brown trout like this one, the best part of the day was pulling off the lough for lunch and getting to explore a wild, uninhabited island as only nine year olds know how.

Hopefully this was the first of many Corrib adventures for Gearóid……

Forecast of rain in Kerry sees hopes rise with salmon and sea trout anglers

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports:

21 May: For the first time in a month we have good news from the Met Office. We have heavy showers forecast for today and there is rain moving into the South West on Wednesday evening through until Thursday. The week end is given to be broken again so with the high tides and the rain we should have a good run of fish.

Junior pikers have great day with Newbridge Anglers in All Ireland qualifier

Brendan Jarvis of Newbridge District Pike Anglers reports on their latest competition…

Newbridge and District Pike Anglers club held the 1st IFPAC All Ireland Junior Pike Championships qualifier of 2019 season at the weekend. The venue  was a section of canal along the River Barrow. The weather gods where good to us with very mild temperatures and no rain. It made a great day and they fished from 11am to 3pm. In total we had 16 juniors who caught and released 5 pike to 6lb 14oz. When the weights where being done we all had pizza, chips and plenty of sambos.  We also had IFPAC youth officer Andrius there who was running a little separate competition where the kids had to cast a lure into a bucket for a chance to win a lovely rod. Unfortunately none of our kids hit the target but was a great buzz watching them take their turns so well done to all involved.

A Fun Day Out on Lough Sheelin for Patrick and Sinead

Boyne Valley Fishing guides have been in touch with some news about Lough Sheelin. The mayfly has finally arrived but hatches are reported to be sporadic in places and the fishing has been described as fairly tough going. Although good catches have been reported from certain areas, overall, it still needs to click up a gear. Peter Cunningham was guiding for local couple Patrick and Sinead on Lough Sheelin over the weekend. It was overcast with some light showers and there was a decent hatch of mayfly. This was Patricks’ first time on Lough Sheelin and as he got to grips with the lake and the conditions he managed to catch his very first Lough Sheelin trout on the fly. A big well done to Patrick!

Elsewhere on the lake John Baker had a number of fine fish with the best weighing in at around 5lbs. If you fancy a days guided fishing with Peter Cunningham or one of his team of guides at Boyne Valley Fishing Guides he can be contacted below

Watch: Marcin Kantor shad fishing video diary

Marin Kantor reports:

Twaite Shad fishing in St. Mullin’s in Ireland has become my annual fishing tradition. It’s a mecca of fishing for shad in Ireland and souls from all over the country come down to the picturesque village of St. Mullin’s as soon as the first fish start running the river around April / May each year.

Fishing for Twaite Shad is an event in itself. The atmosphere, the people, the views are second to none and once you try this shad fishing you will be coming back there every year…

May a month of firsts for Wicklow Boat Charters

The Month of May has already accounted for numerous firsts for Wicklow Boat Charters. The first Tope of the season fell to Noemie Finklers group on the 9th, the first Smooth Hound went to Roberto Carcoba on the 11th, this was followed by his first Specimen Smooth Hound of 9.4lb, Roberto took the Wicklow Boat Charters Polo Shirt prize. As the fishing improves by the day we counted 10 species on Leong’s group trip in the bay while Anthony clocked up the first Thornback Ray with an individuals trip on the 18th. A lot of the fishing has fell on Springs so we look forward to next week when the Neap tides fall in.

There’s still first Specimen Tope polo shirt up for grabs, and first Black Bream, while the Free Customer Competitions are running again this year, make sure to get the skipper to record your catches.
