An average 10kg per angler per day when fishing in teams to international rule represents the great fishing to be experienced on Inniscarra.

Mayfly up on Derg and good trout reported

Adrian Duffy, IFI Limerick, reports that trout fishing on Lough Derg looks to be very promising this year. Already anglers are meeting good fish on wet and dry mayfly.

French angler Oliver Berne caught a beautiful trout of around 3lb on the Lake near Luska while fishing with two other French anglers. Adrian met up with these happy customers from Bordeaux who had stories of another Irish angler who had lost a fish of 4lb in the same area.

At Scarriff some great fishing to wets was enjoyed last week but was very weather dependent. Catches went from as many as over 20 to a boat to zero from one day to the next. Eamon Giblin fishing from Anglers Paradise, had 4 fish on a Sooty Olive Dabbler on Wednesday last week but then had nothing until he landed a smashing 4lb trout on a Royal Wulff on Sunday. Other boats in the Bay saw one or 2 fish landed on a mix of wets the same day.

Conditions are much improved since the weekend and better fishing is expected over the bank holiday weekend.

Irish Angling Update – 03 May 2019

The Rough Month of the Cuckoo is still with us as the weather flips from storms to stills and frosty morns to warm afternoons. Most areas recorded 1 ½ times their usual rainfall with up to 2 ½ times the norm in parts of south Leinster. Storm Hannah made for an unfishable Friday and the blustery conditions persisted through most of Saturday, so most of the weekend’s fishing was limited to Sunday.

Salmon anglers are getting some decent fishing on a number of rivers across the south east and south west. The Nore saw 3 fish caught and released at Mount Juliet in recent days and the Slaney had a few more good fish despite the floods there. The Munster Blackwater had a few double figure fish and a very early grilse to report. Over in Kerry April was described as a slow month on the Laune, but fish to 18lb were landed. Fishing on Currane seems to be picking up and a few more sea trout were reported from the Owenmore.

Trout anglers are enjoying the early part of the Mayfly on Loughs Derg and Corrib. In general fishing on the larger lakes has been a mixed affair due to the varied weather on offer recently, but some great fishing was enjoyed by those lucky enough to be out on the better days.

Pike anglers in Cavan, Longford and Roscommon are reporting good fishing, again, dependent on the weather. Congratulations to Albert Mc Namara, the new IFPAC champion for 2019. Albert had a nice bag of fish weighing 45Ib 1oz from a Roscommon venue in pretty awful conditions on Saturday.

bream
Mark Theedom wins Catch of the Week for his bream weighing in at 11lb 2oz

Coarse anglers in Co. Cavan had some huge bream to over 11lb. Mark Theedom and Gerald Greene were fishing a morning session with Pauric McGearty on Saturday. The lads had great sport with the biggest bream weighing 11lb 2oz as well as a couple of fish in the 8-10lb bracket. Mark wins Catch of the Week for his big bream, but Gerard did pretty well the next day getting 8 bream over 10lb and 9 over 9lb!

Mostly dry and settled over the weekend, if a bit cooler, and turning more changeable and unsettled next week, with rain or showers becoming widespread and heavy in places. Becoming windy, too, with strong and gusty easterly winds developing. That’s just May for you…

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

3 salmon at Mountt Juliet on the Nore

Dan O’Neill reports from the River Nore…

02 May: Quite a substantial amount of rain Saturday night and most of Sunday morning, The river was starting to become angry, a slight tint of colour and swelling. This however didn’t stop Paul who’s persistence in any angling situation is admirable. Paul took to the middle reaches of the fishery to try his luck of which today was all good. Spotting a nice area, Paul began casting and it wasn’t long before the first salmon came to the net. A quick greeting and picture saw the salmon returned safely on its journey.

Just enough time for a quick photo before the salmon goes back
Just enough time for a quick photo before the salmon goes back

So this was the first salmon on the Mount Juliet fishery this season. It wasn’t much longer before Paul was into another salmon. Slightly smaller than the first but any salmon is a much welcomed visitor by any salmon angler. The fish was netted, pictured and returned again safely. Nice to see these fish and in such lovely condition.

A very well done and congratulations to Paul who had had the first 2 salmon on the fishery this season. His admirable persistence I spoke of earlier paid off nicely,

Dan O’Neill

Not many salmon from the Bandon, but river in good order

There was one salmon reported on Bandon angling association waters for the week and one lost and an unconfirmed report of a salmon in Dunmanway.  The river remains in good order for all methods at the moment.

Bandon Angling Association have set up a guiding service in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon. Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Inniscarra Fishery

This salmon fishery is located between Cork City and the dam at Inniscarra (9 miles). The fishery is run by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and an ESB permit is required. There is a fair run of fish with a very good grilse run dependent on water. Permits can be purchased on site from Dan O’Riordan, ESB Inniscarra; 087-9983879.

A few salmon from the Blackwater including a grilse

Very little activity reported last week with unsettled weather conditions still contributing to low angler numbers in the catchment although a few fish were reported around Killavullen.

Water levels are improving and earlier in the week an early grilse was caught and released by an angler fishing on Blackwater Salmon Fishery water.

Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Due to the location of the beats, fishing can still usually be offered in low or high water.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Jérôme LECLERC with his first Pike also caught using Jerk bait

French anglers Yohan, Marc and Jerome who were on holidays with their families took three days out to try some Pike fishing around the area. Kevin from Melview Fishing Lodge was there guide on their first day to show them around the water. The guys came well prepared for all weathers which was just as well because conditions were not the best at times.

Marc AUDOUIN with one of his Pike on Jerk bait.

Braving the weather the first day saw them catch some nice Pike using Jerk baits, and on day two they were unable to fish because of high winds. Day three they went out on their own and using the same approach and managed to catch some nice Pike, the guys were great company and a pleasure to spend time fishing with.
