More salmon from the Blackwater, prospects look good

There were a few more salmon from the Munster Blackwater at the weekend…

29 March: Jason Corcoran had another lovely salmon this morning from the Ballincurrig beat on the Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery. The fish came to a size 8 cascade. Water temperature is sitting just above 9.5 degrees and the water level for the upper beats is sitting at 1.45.
Water level at Ballyduff is at 0.58. Jason reports that not much rain is forecast in the coming days and all beats will be fishable and prospects are looking very good.

31 March: Glenda Powell of Blackwater Salmon Fishery  marked Mother’s Day with a time on the water. The weather was beautiful on Sunday and Blackwater was in super order. Well done Denis who caught and released his first fish of the season, a sea-liced 10 lber caught on Kilmurry.

Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Due to the location of the beats, fishing can still usually be offered in low or high water.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Delphi has above average catch for March

David McEvoy reports from Delphi:

01 April: We finished up with 21 fish landed here at Delphi for March, which is slightly down on last year but still well above our 10 year average of 16.

Delphi

Five fish have been landed since my last update. Fishing had slowed down a bit but this was mainly as a result of lower water. March was quite wet, with 350mms (13.77”); all of which bar 3mms fell up to the 21st. Water levels have dropped off dramatically since and the river is now at 15, although it is raining at the moment, and there is more forecast for the next few days. We’ll just have to wait and see how much!!

Our Swedish group did manage to land one fish for their week and they met quite a few more. There was also a fish on the bank which slipped back into the river and you all know what happened next! Thomas Dehlin, had a fish off Finlough of 7lbs on a McLeod.

We then welcomed our experienced Week 13 group who have been with us for many years. They managed to land four fish. Yvonne had two, one from the Rock Pool of 8lbs6ozs on a Snaelda and the second of approx. 7lbs from Salmon City on Finlough on a Delphi Collie. There were two off Finlough on the 27thwith Fredo having one of 8lbs on a Collie Dog and Holger Peres the other of 8lbs7ozs on a Delphi Collie.

That brought our total for March to 21 and for the year to date to 34, which is not a bad start to the season. Hopefully the rain we are having at the moment will bring water levels up and it will encourage more fish to run!

Irish Angling Update – 29 March 2019

trout
Playing a trout on the Ryewater

Conditions have remained pleasant this past week with cool starts to most days leading to mild, mainly dry, settled weather in most parts. Spring is definitely in the air for now, although cooler temperatures for the week ahead will offset the feel-good factor of the extra hour’s fishing in the evenings from Sunday.

Salmon catches are starting to increase in the west and south. On Lough Inagh, Fishery manager Colin Folan reports that their first salmon of 2019, a fish of 11.5lbs, has been caught by regular UK angler Andrew Crouchman. Fish continue to be caught at Delphi where a steady trickle of salmon are providing sport when conditions suit.

Lough Beltra has seen a couple of springers landed this week. Rocky Moran got the ball rolling when he landed a lovely fish at the Dock on 25 March. Another fine salmon was caught and released by Eddie Manthorpe the following day .

In the south, after a long wait there are a few reports in of salmon from the Munster Blackwater. The Blackwater Salmon Fishery had its first of the season on 23 March; the silver springer, which was released, was caught on the Upper Kilmurry beat. Over on the Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery, Jason Corcoran caught and released another lovely looking fishing on March 26. and another was caught and released by Connie Corcoran the following day.

Still no word of a fresh fish on the Bandon despite good conditions. Lough Currane is getting the odd fish but conditions have to been great on the lake. They might have been better to head up to the Laune, where four fish were caught on Beat 1 for the week.

Leixlip and District Anglers Association held their St Patrick’s Day competition on 24 March; the event was delayed due to the aftermath of storm Emma and the rolling flood which kept the river un-fishable for nearly 2 weeks. After their traditional fry up, they took to the river in earnest, where Gianluca caught a lovely trout of 14.5 inches winning him the Jimmy Carroll trophy for the first time. We are also hearing of good fishing on Lough Sheelin in the midlands and the River Bride in the south.

pike
103 cm pike from Lough Ree #CPRsavesfish Catch of the Week

On the Shannon system Damien Culliney of Anglers Paradise Ireland took a practice run on Lough Ree ahead of the upcoming pike fishing World Cup. Water levels are well up on the lake and it looked like most fish were spawning. A bit of hard work was needed and it all paid off with the catch and release of a fine 103cm pike.

spurdog
Decent spurdog being caught in Wicklow

In Wicklow, Kit Dunne reports that both his boats are in the water for the season ahead, he’s been out a few times already with spurdog to specimen weights and some bull huss getting caught. A little further down the coast and South Shore SAC held their second competition last Sunday in their master angler league. Entries were high and 44 of their finest filled the carpark in Morriscastle eager to extract fish from the calm sea. Dabs and whiting were the most numerous fish and Paul Whelan returned to form winning the competition. Ian Daly got an unbelievable 94cm Bull Huss on a size 6 hook, it was estimated to be over 10lb and that was a fine fish given the conditions.  Over in Galway Bay, the Brazen Hussy II has kicked off her season and the fishing was fantastic; plenty of good size pollack and coalies were caught – the biggest pollack of around 10lbs.

bream
Nice bream from Lough Muckno

Not many coarse angling reports reached the office this week. There was a bit of fishing on Lough Muckno but the catches were not huge. It wasn’t easy on the carp fisheries either, the cold weather on Sunday wasn’t a great start to the Sensas Summer League on Oaklands but some of the anglers did fish well and the winning weight was over 132lb.

Representation on Fishery District Committees

Inland Fisheries Ireland is inviting expressions of interest from suitably qualified individuals to become or continue to be members of Fishery District Committees in the following Fishery Districts where commercial fisheries exist :

  • Lismore; Cork; Kerry (SWRBD); Ballinakill; Bangor (WRBD); Ballyshannon and Letterkenny (NWRBD).

If you are interested in finding out more see: Representation on Fishery District Committees

And now the weather…

Saturday will start mostly dry over the southern half of the country but patchy rain in the northern half will clear southwards during the day with brighter weather to follow from the north. Light variable winds will become northerly and freshen later over Connacht and Ulster. It will turn cooler in the northerly winds with top temperatures reaching 9 or 10 degrees in the north and 11 to 13 degrees further south. Sunday will be a mostly dry day with sunny spells, although there may be a few isolated spots of rain. It will be cool, with maximum temperatures of 9 or 10 degrees in the north and and east and 11 to 13 degrees in the west and south, in light to moderate northeast to east winds. Sunday night will be mostly dry and cloudy. Not quite as cold as Saturday night, with minimum temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees. It will be a coold cloudy and wet start to the week and the out look is is for the weather to remain cool and unsettled for the rest of the week, with overnight frosts possible. It was lovely while it lasted…

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Morriscastle a good venue for South Shore anglers

South Shore Sea Angling Club held their second competition in their master angler league last Sunday…

26 March: South Shore held their second competition last Sunday in their master angler league. Entries were high with 49 anglers putting their names on the entry sheet. As always we had some drop outs due to various reasons, however 44 of our finest filled the carpark in Morriscastle eager to extract fish from the calm sea.

fishing
On the beach

Morriscastle is one of my favorite beaches because it rarely disappoints. With big equinox spring tides running expectations were high as reportsearlier in the week suggested that there might be a few small bass running. Unfortunately we were fishing over low tide and the bank had changed and caused problems for anglers in the low numbers.

Paul Whelan returned to form winning the competition charming 17 fish from peg 34. Sam Findley did really well winning the Juniors , Sam is one to watch for the future and been selected to fish for Leinster in the inter provincials in kerry.

Ian Daly got an unbelievable 94cm Bull Huss on a a size 6 hook , it was estimated to be over 10lb that was a fine fish given the conditions.

A big welcome to our newest members Darius Gricus , Arunas Corelis and Rory O’Shea fishing their first club competition.

Dabs seemed the most numerous fish along with Whiting their was also a jammy lone dog taken by Ruairi Coleman on his first cast.

Young David Farrelly was a winner in zone B with big boy Darren Ryan continuing his good run of form winning a mean zone A.
Well done lads the competition is only red hot.

Lough Ree high, pike spawning, but some fish feeding

Damien Culliney of Anglers Paradise Ireland took a practice run on Lough Ree ahead of the up coming pike fishing World Cup.

Water levels are well up on the lake – about 4 feet above normal levels and much of the lake is out in the fields. Fishing was tough and all indications are that the pike are on the spawn. A bit of hard work was needed and it all paid off with the catch and release of this beauty of 103cm on a musky Innovations lure.
