Excellent pike fishing for guests at Melview Lodge

Kevin from Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford welcomed Sean and friend Bill from Dublin through the doors after a little lay off for Kevin due to a back operation and refurbishments to the lodge.  Sean and Bill, who are no strangers to Melview were straight off to do some fishing. The weather was unpredictable at times and high winds out on the water made it difficult at times for the guys, but the lads braved the weather conditions and produced a good number of Pike to 25lbs using various dead baits. Bill hopes to be back within a couple of weeks and Kevin himself hopes to be back in action in a week or so, thanks again lads and hope to see you again soon!

Corrib provides great sport for charitable anglers in Troutmaster competition

Aidan Traynor from the Connacht Predator Club was in touch with a report on their catch-and-release trout competition at the weekend.

Here is a quick report on our “Trout Master” competition: 8am Sunday morning we arrived at Greenfields, the weather wasn’t great but the atmosphere was electric. 15 predator anglers all excited about getting out for our first Trout comp of the new season. After anglers cleaned their boots, clothing and equipment at the disinfection station we had a quick briefing on the rules and how anglers are to measure their fish correctly and safely before releasing them.

Ready for the off
Ready for the off

We took off at 9:30 and fished until 3pm. Anglers had good success and every boat managed to land a fish of the minimum 35cm required length. 3rd place went to Colin Rickard, Frank Carty and Niall Gelston. 2nd place went to Krzysztof Michonski and Łukasz Znamiec, and in 1st place Sławek Preis and Robert Gizycki, Sławek also had the longest fish of the day with a trout of 61cm. Over 20 fish were caught, measured and released on the day.

Rain and wind the only news on Currane

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Curran.

13/2/19

You’ve heard of the lonesome Cowboy, well today local Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy and of www.fishingwithdom.com was complaining he felt like the lonesome Currane Angler fishing out on his own on the Currane prairie in a wild SW wind, as the Currane waves crashed into his bow, Dominic’s reels were silent except for a few interruptions of the odd Kelt taking, or to be more precise 3 strikes! Wind as already stated and overcast. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 5.9. mm. Maximum air temperature 11.8 c.

14/2/19

The Currane anglers were at a standstill as all Salmon stations were closed, thanks to a strong SSE wind as it took control over the Currane waters. Now we go back in time and here is a message to all you anglers, be it Game or Sea fishing, so if your timing is off, the Waterville Swordfish Sundial will solve your problem especially after a few Jars! Wind as already stated, yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 11.3 c.

15/2/19

Sadly again the Currane anglers were at a standstill as the weather takes all the headlines as strong winds from the South and SW take control of the Currane anglers and waters this day. On an optimistic note, as from tomorrow, as my Father would say, we are into the deadly week of the Salmon and there is no argument to that because you will see some action in all departments !! Weather permitting, so watch this space. Yesterdays weather, maximum air temperature 12.8 c.

16/2/19

Today’s fishing action is a carbon copy of Yesterdays facts except there was heavy rain this afternoon and evening, so fly anglers take note. Wind SSW strong. Yesterday weather, amount of rainfall 0.6 mm. Maximum air temperature 12.4 c.

17/2/19

I’ve been told many times over the years that my notes are full of wind, well this week is no exception and again today the Currane anglers were put into checkmate as a strong and gusty wind hammers the North Shore and all the Currane anglers could do was stand there in frustration and reminisce on days gone past and that sums up this weeks action but sadly only a fraction of fishing was done. Wind strong SW and overcast with heavy showers. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 13.0 mm, Maximum air temperature 11.1 c.

18/2/19

Well for starters the Currane anglers did get out manipulating their flies and lures and putting their skill to the test this day, but with all their efforts and my words of wisdom weren’t brought out in practice, but in defence of myself and Currane anglers Lough Currane had a good wind hammering in the past week. All I can say is Thank God we anglers have good genuine excuses. Wind SW fresh good cloud cover with showers. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 6.2 mm. Maximum air temperature 11.1.

19/2/19

No anglers to be seen this day as the wild winds from the SW take control of Lough Currane and to top it all the rain lashed down and it wasn’t long before there was a big flood coming down the Commeragh. On a personal note, even though conditions have been Kat in the past few days I can tell you once the Lake settles down after today’s big flood, fly anglers should make sure their fly lines are in order or if you are old-fashioned, well greased so that you can take that first Salmon on the fly. Yesterdays weather amount of rainfall 2.7 mm. Maximum air temperature 10.3 c.

That is your ration  from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Lovely flattie fishing on Donegal beaches

Stefan Martin reports from Donegal Bay…

11 Feb: Crimson sky’s over the bay this evening as the north sea mackerel that are migrating south are west of Donegal today travelling fast and the silhouette of the boats dotted the horizons as some nice flatties provided beach action for the lads lucky enough to be there to witness it all.

Irish Angling Update – 15 February 2019

show poster

The Ireland Angling Show will take place in the National Show Centre Swords, Co. Dublin this weekend – 16 and 17 February. The Ireland Angling Show is a great weekend for all the family with something for everyone, all ages and abilities catered for. Inland Fisheries Ireland will be there as will the Irish Specimen Fish Committee. We will be running the family zone with aquariums, creepy crawlies from the rivers and an angling simulator – the kids (old and young!) are sure to love it.

More spring salmon have been reported from both Delphi and Drowes and salmon anglers are also reporting success in the south west where the Flesk is fishing well. Glenda Powell announced a great initiative for International Year of the Salmon this week. Blackwater Salmon Fishery will be hosting a Young Person’s Day this year. Glenda will be at the Ireland Angling Show so why not call into her stand and find out more.

The windy weather at the weekend seems to have had an impact of sea angling and we have just one report in this week’s update. Beaches in Donegal are producing flounder and turbot for the Killybegs Mariners.

Silver medalists
Well done Team Ireland – Silver Medallists at the World Shore Championships

In other sea angling news a huge congratulations for another outstanding performance by Team Ireland senior men who won a team silver medal at the World Shore Championships at Langebaan, South Africa. Well done and congratulations to John O’Brien, Sean Ivory, Aidan O’Halloran, JP Molloy, Willie Weir, Richie Gormley, Alby Allan and Joe Carley.

We also have only one story in from coarse angling; OBriensbridge fished well enough at the weekend with lots of small fish making up catches to 11lb 7oz.

In pike angling Mick Flanagan, a regular reporter to these pages, took a win at the Finian Darby Memorial Cup on a very chilly Derravaragh with a pike of 87cm.

And now the weather…

Saturday morning will be dry and bright with sunny spells. It will become cloudier in the afternoon with a little showery rain and mist developing along parts of the south and southeast but elsewhere a good deal of dry weather. Towards evening time a more persistent band of rain will develop along the west coast. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees with moderate to fresh southerly winds but winds strong along coasts. Sunday morning will be wet for a time in all areas as rain spread eastwards across the country. Sunny spells and showers will follow for the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees with fresh southerly winds. The outlook is for mixed milder weather across all of next week. An early spring feel to it all – but probably not the last of the winter weather…

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Super opportunity for young anglers at Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Glenda Powell has some great news for younger anglers interested on getting into fishing…

The river Blackwater has been up and down in levels since the season opened on 1st February. We have had a few people fishing in the last two weeks and had a successful Skagit course on the 2nd.  The river is slowly coming into wadable height for the first time, and we would be expecting our first salmon of the year very soon.

Kids day

This year is the International Year of the Salmon and here at Blackwater Salmon Fishery we are passionate about salmon and we strongly believe that if our salmon are to have a future we need to have anglers on the water in the future.  To help achieve this we must encourage young people to become involved in our sport.

In order to help this happen we will be hosting a ”Young Persons Day” which promises to be both an educational and fun filled introduction to fishing.  We will be talking about, Safety around water, The life cycle of the Salmon, Why clean water is important to us and the fish and we will have a BBQ and try fishing.

The day is the 22nd June and to book a space on this day please contact me.  Any older person who would like to come and help on this day is also welcome to contact me and we will put on a few extra sausages and burgers on the BBQ.

We look forward to a busy year ahead and look forward to seeing you somewhere soon.

The lake will not open till March 1st, and the association has an action packed competition calendar for 2019. It will kick start on April 14th with the Dromone Engineering Cup top prize.

I also see in 2019 its Lough Bane year to host the Jimmy Nally Memorial Cup. This competition rotates yearly from Bane to Derravaragh.

Pauric Martin with the winning pike caught by Mick the Fish

Recently Midland Pike Anglers hosted the Finian Darby Memorial Cup on a very chilly Derravaragh. I teamed up with Pauric Martin of Harbour Court and we had a few nice pike including the winning fish. It was certainly not easy fishing, and rain drifted in from lunchtime and it got very cold. 1st was Mick Flanagan for his pike measuring 87cm, 2nd Paddy Walsh  – 84cm, 3rd Des Howell  – 69cm, 4th Blane Carbury  – 66cm, and 5th Marty Cusworth.
