Lough Corrib Angling Federation welcomes designated waters bye-law

Anthony Trill, Secretary of the Lough Corrib Angling Federation reports om the Designated Salmonid Waters Bye-Law No. 964, 2018…

On 25 October 2018 Minister Richard Bruton signed into effect the Designated Salmonid Waters Bye-Law No. 964, 2018. As the body that consists of the thirteen trout angling clubs around Lough Corrib, in Co. Galway and South Mayo, the Lough Corrib Angling Federation wholeheartedly welcomes this step. Last Easter we met with the then minister Sean Kyne and with local staff of Inland Fisheries Ireland. Minister Kyne indicated then he was considering bringing this bye-law forward and we are happy to see that his ground work has borne results.

Of the hundreds of lakes in Ireland the bye-law names seven waters, including Lough Corrib and all its tributaries, as wild salmonid waters requiring special treatment. The bye-law sets out three important measures.

There is an explicit prohibition on the transfer of fish of any species into these waters without the prior written consent of Inland Fisheries Ireland.

The bye-law relaxes the extreme restrictions on the taking of pike by rod and line from the named waters. These restrictions had been introduced nationally in response to a problem of over-exploitation of pike in some midland lakes. The restrictions never made sense in lough Corrib and we welcome their lifting.

Thirdly, the key to the future is contained in just fourteen words:

“The designated waters shall be managed primarily for the benefit of wild salmonid species”.

Wild salmonid species refers to trout and salmon. Galway salmon weir is world famous and Lough Corrib is renowned as the best wild brown trout fishery in Europe. Our Federation lobbies on behalf of Lough Corrib. Our Cairde Loch Coiribe group raises money which is spent on the protection and development of spawning streams. Our associated Carra Mask Corrib Water Protection Group works to promote the highest possible water quality in the entire catchment. We look forward to continuing the work of our group to give effect to the aspiration that the waters shall be managed primarily for the benefit of wild salmonid species. We look forward to a co-operative relationship with Inland Fisheries Ireland, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and with any agency that can help to protect and develop this wonderful lake.

Cathal Hughes wins Feederfest 2018 on Inniscarra

trophy
The all important feeder

Dutch anglers present a strong challenge throughout the week but its Ireland’s expert feeder angler, Cathal Hughes from County Galway who prevails to win the prestigious FEEDERFEST 2018 title….

Cathal flanked by Tony and Willem

Inniscarra Reservoir nestled in the Lee Valley was looking splendid in its Autumn colours and bright sunny weather leaving the 75 participating tip anglers from England, The Netherlands and Ireland to fish in short sleeves to start the week which ended noticeably cooler as temperatures plummeted overnight on Thursday. The week started with the Fountain House Cup on Sunday an open match to pre-bait the sections. The number of skimmers and bream on the venue quickly confirmed that there was going to be a good weeks fishing ahead. It was a popular win for Dutch angler John Kooij who saw off 87 other anglers with his 24kg to secure the trophy and €500 prize. The main FEEDERFEST event split into five sections and fished by rotation saw 45 anglers on the Greenway daily. Here were the critical sections A and B that you needed to get right to be in with a chance. Section A improved all week and saw superb performances from Tony Hopkinsand Willem Van Der Helm on Friday to secure their runner-up and 3rd positions. D and E saw sections of 10 on the Graveyard and Inishlena, supplemented by 5 pegs on Rooves Bay and the Garden Centre. Skimmer and bream were evident on all sections, but it was catching small roach in large numbers that saw the experts on the tip come through.

Garden Strech

The tight match saw Cathal start the week in pole with a 21kg daily win from the Garden Centre with Tony Hopkins leading the field from Wednesday after the day’s top weight of 20kg at Rooves Bay. Willem’s day 4 weight of 17kg pushed him into third which he held onto as Cathal took the winning spot from his second position with 16.160kg at Rooves Bay, less than a kilo ahead of runner-up Tony Hopkins. It was great to see four from the Netherlands in the top seven and the inclusion of 2016 finalist Neil Mazurek. The 2017 title holder Julian Kendrick just missed out this year finishing in 8th position.

  • 1 CATHAL HUGHES, Ireland 66.820kg
  • 2 TONY HOPKINS, Ireland 65.910kg
  • 3 WILLEM V D HELM, Netherlands 62.790kg
  • 4 HENK ROSKAM, Netherlands 60.110kg
  • 5 LEO KOOT, Netherlands 53.920kg
  • 6 NEIL MAZUREK, Ireland 52.490kg
  • 7 ARNOUT VD STADT, Netherlands 51.280kg

Irelands premier feeder festival has become the event everyone wants to fish and a real challenger between tip anglers from Ireland, England and the Netherlands. Fantastic sponsorship from O’Riordans Bar,Coachford and O’Callaghans Bar & Guest House and Jackie Lennox Cork contributed to a massive prize fund of €16,900 along with €2,000 of ground bait from Sensas Ireland rewarding the top seven winners with super cash prizes on top of daily and section wins.

The all important feeder

Congratulations to Cathal Hughes whose name will now appear alongside Steve Ringer and Julian Kendrick on the custom-made trophy; Cathal returns home with his very own unique hand-crafted feeder hallmarked in Cork silver as commissioned by sponsors Jackie Lennox Chip Shop. The organisers would like to thank O’Callaghan’s and O’Riordan’s Bars in Coachford integral to the event which saw them provide cash sponsorship as well as looking after the anglers from the draw to the evening entertainment which saw different nationalities enjoy the local craic. Organiser Tommy Lawton of inniscarra Lake Tourism Development Ltd would like to thank the sponsors and all those who helped throughout the week an indeed the year to support the angling product that so benefits this rural area of Ireland.

The village of Coachford Co. Cork is at the heart of the angling in the Lee Valley, less then 5 minutes from inniscarra Lake and less than half an hour from Cork City. With its good accessible fishing and range of festivals throughout the year I provides for both the match and leisure angler. Inniscarra Tourism Group Ltd have released a series of events for 2019 which includes a unique ‘continental’ style Pairs competition in June and a number of confined matches for the club angler. The leisure angler can fish at Inniscarra independently with keys available from most B&B’s and O’Callaghans to part behind your peg on the Greenway. Irish Angling Update 26 October 2018

It’s nearly all pike fishing news this week. Some good fishing was reported from the midlands and Lough Corrib and there’s also a big competition coming up next month. Also in pike news is the new regulation which was signed on 25 October…

Inland Fisheries Ireland is reminding all salmon and sea trout anglers of the importance of returning their 2018 angling logbook and unused gill tags on time (by law angling logbook returns must be made by 19th October annually even if there is no catch recorded).  These returns will provide vital information regarding the status and management of our wild Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout stocks for 2019, which is International Year of the Salmon.

Anglers are asked to make the return via the business return envelope which was supplied at the time of license purchase. In the absence of the prepaid logbook return envelope, anglers can return their completed logbook and unused tags to the Inland Fisheries Ireland office address on their licence/logbook.

Any queries in relation to the scheme can be sent to [email protected]. For more information, click here

And now the weather…

Met Eireann tells us to expect a cold Bank Holiday weekend. There’s going to be some sunshine at times but it won’t bring up the temperatures much and you can also bank on overnight frosts and some icy patches.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Super pike for IPS on western lakes, plans to oppose new regulations

The Irish Pike Society had a very enjoyable fish-in on the wild western loughs this weekend past. IPS reports..

A beautiful pike
A beautiful pike

Tough conditions with strong winds and incessant rain didn’t deter the hardy bucks… Or late nights and pints! A few fish caught, no numbers but some quality. Best, and winner of the IPS “Golden balls eggcup” and a voucher from “Southside angling” was the redoubtable Al Rawlings with a nice fish of 29.04lb. Couple of other notable fish were a 25.15lb (118cm) and a 22.00lb. Fantastic hospitality from Eddie Lynch the owner of Fairhill House hotel in Clonbur, which was our base. Probably the guts of €5K pumped into a small rural economy on a wet winter weekend.

New pike regulations

The Irish Pike Society (IPS) condemn in the strongest terms new regulations that allow the killing of four specimen pike (our native Irish predator) per day, per angler, in our premier limestone loughs.

Previous to this new bye-law, specimen pike were legislatively protected by existing laws that stated that all pike over 50cm should be released unharmed, with an allowed catch of only 1 pike of this size per day. This bye-law recognised both their economic contribution to angling tourism (€102 million in 2016) but also their beneficial effect on the relevant ecosystem. It also recognised the fact that over 70% of the angling community will not even visit waters that pike are killed in (ESRI angling report 2016). This new law will mean pike of any size may be killed, including specimens previously highly regarded by our UK and European neighbours.

The Irish Pike Society will be taking a high court challenge to this new regulation.

ENNELL NEWS

Last Sunday Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association hosted their annual club pike competition. This competition is sponsored by my old angling pal Con Hope, and John Dooner won with a pike of 7lbs 8oz. Con was on hand to present John with the Perpetual Cup in Whitebridge Bay. I was talking to some L.E.T.P.A. Officers and they are very concerned by water levels in Whitebridge Bay. As we speak the L.E.T.P.A. Officers and committee members are speaking with some contractor’s regarding the dredging of Whitebridge Bay in the coming weeks. Anglers with boats in Whitebridge Bay are asked if possible to remove their boats, so as the Bay will be clear when work begins. More on this in next weeks Angling Focus.

ED AND MANTAS

pike
Ed

Regular visitors to Midland waters Edvinas Cinga and pal Mantas Martinauskas were back drifting across Mullingar last weekend fishing for pike. Now settled and living in Ireland for quite a number of years the Lithuanian lads love their fishing, and have featured in Angling Focus, over the years on Owel, Ennell, Lene, and Derravaragh.

Mantas

This trip Ed and Mantas were doing a bit of dead baiting, and lure fishing for pike and had some success. The deadly Duo only landed 4 pike, but some of the fish were in mint condition and pushing the magical double figures.

MICK AND DES

pike
Des

I teamed up with fellow Midland Pike Angling Club member Des Howell of Maynooth for a planned day at the pike when the trout season was over. Des drops down every weekend for pike and perch fishing, and is a top class angler. Last Sunday we had a few early Halloween Howlers, and I managed to catch 3 pike well up in the double figures, hitting 16-17lbs in weight. On we lure fished all day as Des is a fanatical jerk bait angler, and has some selection of top pike lures. Early in morning with the heavy mist and dark conditions we struggled, but as soon as the sun came out, the pike came out to play. It reminded me of years back talking to some of our older seasoned pike anglers, who told me bright condition bright lures.

This did actually work on our bigger Midland Lakes, and as soon as the sun came out the Silver Spoons could be seen dangling from the trolling rods. Now that’s your “Top Tip” for this week. If you’re out over the Halloween bank Holiday weekend, and latch onto a few frighting Halloween Pike, send in a pic and a few details of your angling adventure.
