First shark trip of the year for Jim Clohessy
Well-known angler Jim Clohessy took his first run at shark this year and it turned out to be an interesting trip. They had their first shark minutes into the first drift, but then the drift got messed up by some strong wind vs. tide action and the bites dried up.

But, as the day wemt on, the wind picked up and they got onto a consistent drift and suddenly there were shark all around the boat.

They picked up a few good fish, but many of the fish seemed more interested in the motor than the baits. See Jim’s Facebook Page for a full report and plenty of footage.

Mullet a plenty for David Ridgen on the Sheeps Head
Anyone heading down to West Cork for a spot of shore angling should check out the House on the Sheeps Head fishing blog by David Ridgen. David is a bit of a mullet fanatic, and he has just posted his July fishing report, and he began the month with a bang by catching a mullet for the 52nd month in a row….

His blog is full of useful information on fishing in the area, and it’s not all about mullet, as he targets other species when the time is right.

Ulster Krakens plagued by mackerel at Fahan
The Ulster Krakens SAC made the trip to Donegal for round eight of their league and were hoping for an improvement on the fishing following a disappointing trip to Wicklow last time around. Sadly, it wasn’t to be, as the only fish that were showing in any numbers were non-counting mackerel, which hoovered up some anglers’ baits almost as soon as they it the water. Mackerel were so abundant that talk turned to switching to feathers to get the freezer stocked up…

Anglers were also troubled by boats passing by close in and interfering with lines, so all in all it was a difficult night on the beach. As counting fish were few and far between, scorecards were fairly sparse, and a small run of fish would bring you to the top of the leaderboard, and that’ how it happened for Raymong McCann, who had a flurry of fish, including a nice ray to give him the honours on the night.

Extra foot of water a welcome boon to Edenderry anglers
Canal anglers have had a hard time of it this year as low water levels on the canals have made fishing very tricky in a lot of places. Waterways Ireland has been working to address the issue, and it seems some progress has been made as the anglers from Edenderry Coarse Angling Club found that the canal had risen by a foot when they turned up for their last match. This helped them to some reasonable bags, despite some unwelcome sunshine and very clear water, and Dean Murray was the pick of the bunch with a very respectable 20lb+.
