Man Convicted of Possession of Large Number of Undersize Oysters in Galway

On Tuesday 5th June 2018, a man was convicted by Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court for being in possession of 1,425 undersized native oysters (Ostrea edulis), contrary to Bye-Law 628 of 1982.

Patrick Cormican, with an address at Newline, Maree, County Galway pleaded guilty to a single charge of being in possession of the undersize native oysters when apprehended by Fisheries Officers at approximately 1pm on 7th December 2017, at Blackweir, County Galway.

Solicitor Dioraí Ford, representing Inland Fisheries Ireland, outlined to the court that Fisheries Officers observed Mr. Cormican loading bags of oysters into a tractor trailer at Blackweir on that date. The officers were aware that these bags contained undersized oysters. Mr. Cormican is a licenced oyster fisherman and on the day in question had approximately 5,000 oysters, of which 1,425 were undersized. Officers spent over an hour and a half measuring and counting the oysters.

The court heard that Mr. Cormican was co-operative on the day in question and had a previous conviction in relation to oysters dating from 1991. Judge Fahy commented on how serious a matter this was, particularly with the local connection with the world famous Clarinbrige Oyster. Mr Ford outlined that the Fisheries Officers involved in the case had never seen such an amount of undersized oysters before while carrying out an inspection of this type.

Judge Fahy convicted Mr. Cormican and imposed a fine of €750. Costs of €800 were also awarded against Mr. Cormican.

Mediterranean weather continues at Delphi

David McEvoy reports from the Delphi Fishery…

Delphi

09 June: The weather here in Delphi has been stunning since my last update, although not ideal for salmon fishing! I must again say that we are extremely lucky with the long standing customers and friends we have, in that they truly appreciate Delphi for the beautiful place it is.

There has been no rain since my last update, except for a thunder shower we had yesterday, when 7.5mms fell in about 15 minutes and put the river from -6 to 0. Air temperatures have been consistently 20+ for the last week and water temperatures peaked at 21.6 degrees on Thursday. At present, according to the long-range forecast, it looks like we will get rain on Wednesday, which would be most welcome to all those of a piscatorial nature!

The draft net quota on the Killary is complete so any fish waiting to run, should be able to do so unhindered, when we get some water. On a positive note, to date, I have seen very few lice infested sea trout post smolts returning, which would make me hopeful of good sea trout returns this year. This should also mean that migration conditions for salmon smolts were good, the proof of which we will hopefully see in the next two years.

Delphi

Needless to say salmon fishing has been extremely difficult, with only one landed since my last update. Jim Stafford had a nice fish of approx. 9.5lbs from the Turn Pool on a Cascade in very difficult conditions. Out total for May was 40 which was again above our 10 year average. Total for the year to date is 114.

With a bit of luck and rain this week, there should be fish to report by next weekend.

Good salmon caught on Laune despite sunshine

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association reports on the latest salmon catches on the river…

River fishing

08 June: Despite the hot and bright weather over the past few weeks the river Laune has continued to fish well. Since our last report just over 3 weeks ago Laune Anglers water have accounted for approx 30 salmon. What has been even more encouraging has been the size and quality of the fish caught. The majority of fish caught have bee good salmon into the double figures and the average size of the fish caught has been around 11lbs with fish up to 15lbs landed. One member landed 3 fish alone 2 weekends ago, 15lbs, 12lbs & 9lbs. Very few Grilse have been reported caught as of yet but this seems to be the case throughout the country. Fish have been caught on all methods, however the fly seems to have been the most productive method at the moment.

water level graph

The river is currently at 0.88m on the gauge and is starting to get on the low side, however its still far from too low and fish are being seen running the river most days and there are still reports of fresh fish being caught in the Killarney lakes.

Prospects

While the good weather is set to last for another week or so fishing should remain okay with plenty of water still for fish to run. When the main grilse appears the current lower water conditions will suite the Laune, slowing the fish down from running to the lakes too quickly.

Irish Angling Update 08 June 2018

River Suir Salmon #CPRsavesfish

The blazing hot sunshine continued all this week with temperatures hitting 26C in some places. There were thundery showers at times that invariable impacted on angling, but on the whole its been a pretty good week – if a bit bright at times for fishing(!).

Salmon anglers are no different to any other fishermen when it comes to sunshine, but nonetheless some great fish were caught this week, particularly from the River Suir and Munster Blackwater. The Lee and west Cork rivers all need water and so fishing has been slow in the county. Kerry fared much the same but some salmon were met on Lough Currane. The grilse run is starting to build at the Galway Fishery and the drop of rain seen over the Erriff at the weekend saw a small jump in catches there. The Moy catch was down to 148 salmon which was not surprising given the conditions and Carrowmore managed to produce a few fish even in the sunny weather.

Another Corrib beauty illuminated by the early morning sunlight
Another Corrib beauty illuminated by the early morning sunlight

The late spring and sudden summer seem to have conspired to produce a very unsatisfactory mayfly season. Many lakes have seen trout move to the abundant coarse fish fry, affecting even the evening fishing. One lake that has bucked the trend a little is Arrow which is still producing good spent fishing. Good hatches of caenis on Corrib have seen the fly angler catered for there, as long as he gets up early enough. To put the early morning advantage in context, Larry McCarthy, starting at 4.30am and  finishing before most anglers hit the lake, in one 5 day period boated and returned 84 trout. Olives and buzzer continue to provide sport for the more relaxed anglers.

A happy Bob Nudd with his final day catch
A happy Bob Nudd with his final day catch

Four Times World Champion Bob Nudd came from 7th position on the final day to win the Ballinamore Lakeland Festival last weekend. Bob is one of the biggest fans of Irish angling festivals and is back fishing the Arvagh Festival this week. We also have reports from the 2018 International Coarse Fishing Festival fished in Longford, the Frank Holding Memorial fished on the Grand Canal in Kildare and the CM Lakelands 3 Day Festival.

Catch and release
A big fly caught pike is released on Lough Derg #CPRsavesfish

Pike angling tends to slow down at this time of year, but Lough Derg’s fish have yet to look for the off switch. Some incredible catches were reported in the last week with as many 5 fish over 1m in a day to one guide alone. Dutch anglers in Longford also beat the odds to produce some good pike in the sunny weather.

1.7 meter Blue Shark for David Edwards onboard Tigger. Ireland’s first reported blue shark for 2018. #CPRsavesfish

Catch of the Week goes to charter boat skipper David Edwards. David had the Tigger out for a spin last Thursday and not far from Clonakilty he hooked and landed the first blue shark of the year. It’s been a lovely few days for sea anglers marked by specimens and special fish. On the east coast smooth hounds to specimen size were caught along with black bream and more. Bluemouths featured in catches of one Kerry charter boat. Another boat in Clare had both common skate and the much more uncommon white skate. Sometimes the Catch of the Week could be won over and over on just one day!

And now the weather…

The forecast from Met Eireann tells us it will be warm again tomorrow with highs of 19 to 23 degrees. Largely dry with hazy sunshine for the morning but further heavy and thundery showers will occur during the afternoon and evening. Warm in the early days of next week, especially in the southern half of the country and there will be a good deal of dry weather, with some scattered showers, most of them on Sunday. Indications are that it will become cooler and changeable from midweek. Well, it was fun while it lasted.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Big Derg pike feeding even in the sunshine

There have been loads of exciting pike fishing reports from Lough Derg recently. Not even the bright sun of the last few days has put a stop to the exceptional catches. Pierre Monjarrate is seeing catches of as many as 5 fish over 1m on the better days and seems to be getting about 2 every day he is out. TJ’s anglers are also getting some fabulous looking fish – particularly his husband and wife anglers.

Pike have been taking the lures right by the boat for Paul Bourke and some pretty big big fish have turned up for his anglers too. The boys in Black Bay Angling have had some great pike on fly, proving that Lough Derg is by no means just a lure lake. While over on the Tipperary side Cedric Charpentier had some lovely meter beaters in the almost tropical conditions.

IFI investigating significant fish kill on Ballygowan River, Claremorris, Co Mayo

IFI is asking the agricultural sector to be “extremely careful” in the current hot weather.

On the evening of Wednesday 6th June officers of Inland Fisheries Ireland received a report from a member of the public in Claremorris, Co Mayo regarding a fish kill on the Ballygowan River (one of the prime spawning tributaries of the Robe River), which flows into Lough Mask.

Investigations are still ongoing. However, it is believed that the fish kill was the result of effluent of agricultural origin although the precise source has not as yet been identified. Local reports noted fish, primarily wild brown trout, in an agitated state in the river on Tuesday evening 5th June.

Fisheries officers at the scene

The stream where the mortalities occurred currently shows no sign of enrichment, and it is therefore probable that some polluting matter of a transient nature passed through the river and has since dissipated downstream.

Regretfully, over a thousand wild brown trout from 0-4 years old have been removed dead from the river. Other fish mortalities included stone loach and crayfish.

Given the extent of the damage to the river it will take some years for this stretch affected to make a full recovery.

Greg Forde, Head of Operations at Inland Fisheries Ireland, said: “Currently, water levels are at an all-time low and water temperatures are getting very high for trout and salmon. These factors combined can mean that a small amount of polluting matter can have devastating results. Inland Fisheries Ireland is calling on all farmers and silage contractors, in particular, to be extremely careful in the current conditions to ensure that no effluent is released near drains, streams and rivers, and silage clamps are properly bunded. Extreme care should be taken when spreading slurry to avoid all water courses in order to protect our valuable natural rivers and streams.”

A grim toll

The attached photos here show just a proportion of the fish recovered by officers of Inland Fisheries Ireland following the fish kill.

Water samples have been taken for analysis and investigations are ongoing.

IFI is also asking the public to help protect and conserve the fisheries resource by reporting incidents or suspicions of illegal fishing to its confidential hotline number telephone 0818 34 74 24 or 0818 FISH 24.

The five-day coarse angling competition was fished on Loughs Garadice, Scur and Kiltybarden over five hot and sunny days; as with the conditions all over Ireland at the moment the fishing was tough. A few roach were present but most catches were skimmers, small hybrids with some decent sized perch.
