Tommy Dowd wins 2018 International Coarse Fishing Festival

Adrian Osterloh of Lough Ree Laneborough Angling Hub reports that Ballyleague/Lanesborough was host to the 2018 International Coarse Fishing Festival over the Bank Holiday week-end.

The areas fished were the Hot-stretch in Lanesborough, Kilnacarrow and the canal at Killashee.

The lovely weather seemed to minimise catches, but all in all, a good weekend’s fishing was had by all.

Congratulations to Tommy Dowd, from Cavan, who finished in top position, winning not only a nice cash prize but also the Hugh Keane Memorial Cup, a trophy kindly dedicated by the family of our late Chairman Hugh Keane.

Lee quiet, just a few salmon at Inniscarra

No report of catches from the club waters on the Lee last week to Sunday 3 June.

INNISCARRA FISHERY

3 salmon landed for the week.  An angler from Blarney caught a fish of 11lbs on shrimp on Saturday.  An angler from Limerick had a fish of 11lbs on Sunday and on the same day another fish of 13lbs was landed by a local angler; these fish were caught on shrimp.

Go fishing…

The River Lee drains a catchment of 484 square miles of which much is taken up by two large reservoirs. Salmon Angling is confined to an 8 mile stretch from Inniscarra dam to Cork city.

Lee Salmon Anglers Club

The Lee Salmon Anglers club was established in 1967. It was formed by a group of anglers interested in protecting and promoting the sport of salmon and trout angling on the river Lee. Day tickets available: http://www.leesalmonanglers.ie/

Inniscarra Fishery

This salmon fishery is located between Cork City and the dam at Inniscarra (9 miles). The fishery is run by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and an ESB permit is required. There is a fair run of fish with a very good grilse run dependent on water. Permits can be purchased on site from Dan O’Riordan, ESB Inniscarra; 087-9983879.

Drought on Bandon, few salmon caught

3 salmon landed for the week on low water. Best was 17lbs landed on shrimp on Bandon Angling Association waters.

A drought condition prevailing at the moment and the river is badly in need of a flood.

Go Fishing…

Bandon Angling Association have set up a guiding service in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon. Day tickets and club membership are also available.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Difficult week on the Moy

Billy Thornton in our Ballina Office reports that conditions on the River Moy were far from ideal last week with low water, bright sunshine and high temperatures reducing angling effort considerably on the previous week. However 148 salmon were reported caught throughout the system.

With a good show of fish on most fisheries and the numbers of grilse moving into the river on each tide increasing, prospects are looking good for the week ahead.

Still good Spent Gnat fishing on Lough Arrow

During the last week, trout angling on Lough Arrow was mostly confined to spent gnat fishing during late afternoons and evenings.

Finnian Dodd reported that Sean Hogan and Mark Coady made their annual trip to Lough Arrow and were well rewarded for their efforts. Fishing from Dodd’s Shore they caught fish each day with a best day of 7 fish and a best fish of over 3 lbs. All trout were returned. Similarly, Michael O Donnell and fishing partner had about a dozen fish for three days with several over 3 lbs. Michael Penters also fishing from Dodd’s had 7 trout all over 2.5 lbs. for three days fishing. Andreas Brandt from Switzerland boated two fish about 1.5 lbs. each. Others to have fish over the past week fishing from Dodd’s included Michael Martin from Belfast, Will Taylor from Dungannon and local anglers Keith Trotter and Paul Casey. Dodd Boats promotes a catch and release policy and asks all anglers to return as many fish as possible. For boat hire contact Dodd Boats at +353 (0)86 3856790 or +353 (0)85 1074317.

Fishing out of Hargadon’s Boat Hire (+353 (0)85 1740956) , Dublin angler, Eddie Rowe, had 6 trout heaviest approx. 2 lbs., while Ciarán O’Donnell  from Derry had  4 fish heaviest 3 lbs.

Fish take any opportunity to run Erriff

Osgur Grieve reports on fishing on the Erriff from May 25th to June 5th.

We had a quiet end to May with bright sunshine and little fishing being done due to the Mediterranean style of weather we’ve been experiencing. After a 2 week drought we had a small dirty spate on the evening of the 4th of June to bring the river up from 0.54m to around 1.2m – this was enough to encourage the fish that had been waiting out at sea to run the river. On Monday evening 4th June Larry Bergin had an 8.6lbs ranched salmon from the Falls on a Cascade.

The following morning the river was still quite murky and had dropped quickly, down to 0.6m. Despite this John Phelan landed a ranched salmon of 8.3lbs from the Falls on a Cascade, John also hooked and lost a few more. Peter Murphy released a wild 8.7lbs salmon from the Falls along with our first sea trout of the season of about 1lbs on a Cascade.

The next decent amount of rainfall should entice some more fresh fish into the system.

Grilse slowly appearing in better numbers in Galway

Grilse are being seen in better numbers in Galway this week, with good numbers of fish holding in the river at Salmon Weir Bridge, fascinating anglers and tourists alike. The conditions, however, have not been great, with bright sunshine and scorching temperatures making life difficult for angling.

34 fish were reported for the period, with most of these coming on fly. Among those to catch fish were Neil Spellacy, who had 2 grilse to 5lbs this morning, both on fly and losing another. Meath father and son John and Eunan O’Connor had 3 fish for their visit, with 2 on fly and 1 on shrimp. Offaly angler Jim Kinahan also had 2 grilse, one each on fly and shrimp, while Aidan Twomey landed 2 fish to 5.5lbs on fly.

Dublin man Dave O’Reilly landed 2 grilse on fly, while Patrick Cotter from Clare had a nice fish of 7lbs on shrimp. Paul Whelan, up visiting from the Blackwater, lad a lovely 7-pounder on fly, and Ray Foster took 2 grilse to 5lbs on shrimp. French visitor Jean le Moal had a fish on spinner before the water level dropped, and Kevin Mitchell had a nice grilse on the fly.

With grilse coming in better numbers now, the next week should see a good head of fish building up in the river and moving upstream. Water levels are perfect for the fly, although we could do with a drop in temperatures and more cloud to improve sport further. I’ won’t be popular wishing for that, though!

"The early bird gets the worm" on Corrib this week

Mayfly fishing is petering out with this heatwave, with dappers finding it hard to keep fly fresh overnight. Winds have been light variable over the last few days, which hasn’t helped matters, so it looks like that’s it for the first mayfly hatch of the year. Watch this space, however, as in recent years the second mayfly hatch in late July has often produced exceptional sport, with some comparing it favourably to the May hatch. The heat and light winds have brought on Caenis hatches, however, and the early risers have been having tremendous sport. Buzzer and dry olives have also been producing some good fishing.
Ted Wherry of Mayfly Lodge, Ballynalty (tel. 087-4305957)  reports of visiting anglers Peter Dixon and Adrian Harrop from Lincolnshire England having a difficult week’s fishing in the Ballynalty and Ballindiff areas, catching few fish but Peter landed a fine fish of 4.5lbs.

In the Oughterard area Kevin Molloy of Baurisheen Boat boat Hire, Guiding & Self Catering (tel. 087-9604170) reports visiting Swiss anglers Keist Othmav & Franz Kramev landing 6 trout for their visit with fish weighing 1-2lbs. Staying in the Oughterard area Basil Shields of Ardnasillagh Lodge (tel 091-552550) reports excellent fishing on Lough Corrib on Caenis, Dry Olives and Buzzer for those staying at the Lodge. Colin Wright from Belfast for six days fishing had 37 trout, 7 on Caenis the remainder on dry olives and buzzer with the best fish being 4.75lbs. Stephen Richardson had 9 fish for one day all on buzzer. David Johnson had 6 fish for one day, all on buzzer. Colman Counihan had 5 fish on Caenis on Sunday morning last.
In the Cornamona area Tom Doc Sullivan http://www.tomdoc.com guided Neil Carmichael for 6 days and had only one day where Neil did not have a fish, Neil landed 16 fish all on mayfly patterns (8 on wets, 8 on dries) with the best fish being 3.25lbs, and Neil sportingly released all his fish.
Richard Molloy of Ballard Shore Boat Hire & Self Catering (tel. 087-2879339) reports a quieter week gone by due to the bright sunshine conditions but Meath angler Paul Geraghty bucked the trend whilst out trolling over the weekend and landed a fine trout of 12lbs 8oz which he sportingly returned to the lake.

Larry McCarthy from Corrib View Lodge reports exceptional fishing for his early-rising clients. Larry says “I started my 4.30am shifts on Sunday the 27th of May and it has been unbelievable Caenis action every morning since. I guided one client Jeremy for 5 days from Sunday evening last and boated and returned 84 trout with a very high average weight. Thursday our last day together we had 18 trout weighed and released for a 3lb average.

On Friday I spent a few hours with my son John and we had 10 fish to 4.5lbs. Saturday I finished with Ann Mc Williams and she boated 4 good fish on her first Caenis morning, and on Sunday I guided Anthony Quinn, a regular client and friend and he boated 8 good trout on Caenis. The early starts have been great with some incredible sun rises thrown in.

Sunrise on Corrib can be a great time to be on the lake.
Sunrise on Corrib can be a great time to be on the lake.

I’ve been out a couple of mornings myself, and it really is incredible to see the numbers of fish rising all over the bay. Getting close to them, however, is another matter, and it’s a testament to Larry’s skill as a boatman that he can get his clients that number of fish. Other anglers have been having great sport on the other side of the lake, with Harold O’Toole landing 7 good trout in one morning, all sportingly released.

With the settled weather set to continue, and the Caenis hatches just getting started in earnest, “the early bird gets the worm” looks set to be the recipe for success on Corrib over the next week or two.
