Following on from their recent very successful salmon fishing course Ken Whelan and Jason O Riordan will be running a sea trout course in July. They will have a choice of venues to avail of in order to demonstrate different tactics and also to deal with varying river conditions and include estuaries. The cost of this one day course covers beat fees but participants will need their State license. Guiding will also be available for participants at a reduced rate the day after.
Once again local trout angling club Lakeland Anglers were on Lough Conn recently for their annual 3-day trip. It proved a huge success, with some exception bags of trout being caught. Speaking to Alan Tyrrell of Lakeland Anglers he told us conditions were ideal and a steady hatch of May fly had the Conn trout surface feeding.

Moya Molloy is reeling in some cracking rainbow trout of late from the Whitelake. Just eight years old Moya really loves her angling adventures with day Christy, and is really fired up for the school summer holidays. Moys attends St.Nicholas Primary in Longwood, and made he communion last Saturday May 26th. Its hearh warming to see young anglers out and about on the waterways, and Moya is a member of Longwood Anglers, and Longwood Gun Club. Here in Angling Focus, we are looking forwardto hearing more on Moya’s angling adventures, and we have a special prize for the Longwood angler. I was telling Brian Conlon of Wild Total Outdoors in Harbour Street about the young Longwood angler, who loves the fishing and shooting game, and he is sponsoring Moya some angling gear, which she can use during the summer school holidays.

We have reports in for just one West Cork river for the week ending 27 May.
On the Ilen 6 salmon landed for the week, best was 12lbs caught by a club angler on worm.
Go fishing…
The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.
The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.
William Thornton has a short report from the Moy Estuary…
Moy Estuary WE Sunday 27th May 2018.
Judd Ruane reports that Sea Trout fishing on the Moy Estuary is starting to improve, however persistent Northerly winds continue to make angling difficult.

A delighted David Edwards, skipper of the Tigger Charterboat in Clonakilty reports on a great trip out last Thursday…
1.7 meter Blue Shark for David onboard Tigger. Ireland’s first reported blue shark for 2018. Catch of the Week. #CPRsavesfish
The last day of May produced just one blue shark for me, but it was a special fish. Our first shark of the season and the first reported for Ireland this year. We managed to get the first shark of the year in 2016 too – the shark are generally out there at this time, its just a matter of putting in the effort. Once the water temperature came up past 12C we knew we’d be in with a chance, but the way the spring has been it wasn’t clear whether or not the first blue would be caught in May or sometime in June!

Tigger is a purpose built Procharter 31 angling boat, powered by a 330HP diesel engine and equipped with all necessary safety equipment. Reef and ground drift fishing is generally the most productive method with the potential to catch in excess of 20 species if you adapt your lures and baits accordingly. From mid June through to October it’s usually possible to target the blue shark fishing that is predominatly between 10-15 miles off the estuary. All sharks are released and recent seasons have seen larger species such as mako and threshers being sighted more frequently. Web:www.irelandseaangling.com
Rathmullan today welcomed Sean Kyne TD, Minister with responsibility for the Inland Fisheries sector, to officially launch the first of twelve new state-of-the-art RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats) to be delivered on a phased basis to Inland Fisheries Ireland for use as fisheries protection vessels around Ireland’s coastal zone and larger inland lakes.
Minister Kyne was joined at the launch of ‘Delta 1’ at Rathmullan, near Letterkenny, by Joe McHugh TD Minister with responsibility for Gaeilge, Gaeltacht and the Islands, and local public representatives. Delta 1, which will be based in Letterkenny, enters service today. There were no applications from Republic of Ireland vessel-building companies.
Minister Kyne said: “The launch of this first vessel marks the Government’s commitment to augmenting IFI’s capabilities for protecting valuable inland fisheries species as they migrate offshore and enhancing protection in larger inland lakes. This is the first in a chain of twelve protection and enforcement vessels to be based around the country. The new RIBs will be phased in over a number of years, replacing the current ageing fleet, at a total cost of €3.3m.”
Currently, IFI has 23 RIBs located around the country, the youngest of which was built and began operations in 2006. The new model is the DELTA 780HX Maritime Protection RIB and was designed and built by Delta Power Services of Stockport, UK, following a competitive tendering process. There were no applications from Republic of Ireland vessel-building companies.
IFI assembled an expert team to review the tender applications, including members of the RNLI and Irish Water Safety Association. The twelve new RIBs will be named in sequence from Delta 1 through to Delta 12.
Sean Kyne TD, Minister with responsibility for Inland FIsheries, who was in Co. Donegal to launch the first of the state of the art RIBs, pictured with Minister Joe McHugh TD and Donegal County Mayor, Cllr Gerry McMonagle, along with local crew including Coxswain Cornelius Mc Mullen, Dunfanaghy, Hugh Mooney, Ardara, and James Doherty, Buncrana, at Rathmullan
Trials of the new RIB model took place in Southampton, UK, in mid-April before the Delta 1 was delivered for crew familiarisation and training in Crosshaven, County Cork, in May.
“The recreational angling sector in Ireland is worth €836m to the Irish economy and supports over 11,000 jobs nationwide,” said Minister Kyne, “so it is vital for the protection of our national fisheries resource that we have a modern RIB fleet capable of conducting patrols and responding rapidly to suspected breaches of our fishing laws. Therefore, I endorsed IFI’s view that the phasing in of a new fleet, which conforms to the highest standards of safety, navigation and communications equipment, is overdue and warranted.”
Minister McHugh added: “I know from my time as Minister with responsibility for Inland Fisheries that the new RIBS will provide the added cost-saving bonus that the older fleet required a system of twin boat patrols – for example, one workboat recovering and confiscating illegal nets with up to three crew, as well as another stand-off boat being present for safety and security with two crew. In contrast, the new IFI model is a single boat patrol vessel with an average of three crew. It is, also, a substantially more sophisticated vessel with a Length Overall of 7.80 metres, and is licensed by the Marine Survey Office to operate to 12-miles. This offers the additional capacity to assist the emergency services, if requested.”
The new RIBS will be crewed by fully trained and warranted Fisheries Protection Officers, who also carry the remit to board suspect vessels, as required.
Inland Fisheries Ireland also utilises a number of smaller water-going vessels for fisheries protection on Ireland’s lakes, rivers, and estuaries, including kayaks, jet-skis, and electrofishing and research boats.
Outline specifications of the new DELTA 780HX Maritime Protection RIBs:
Length overall: 7.80m
Beam overall: 2.77m
Draught: 0.18m
Air Draft from waterline: 2.77m
Height on trailer: 3.38m max
Width on trailer: 2.9m max
Engines: Two Yamaha 115 engines, counter-rotating (for stability) with a speed up to 37 Knots

This salmon fishery is located between Cork City and the dam at Inniscarra (9 miles). The fishery is run by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and an ESB permit is required. There is a fair run of fish with a very good grilse run dependent on water. Permits can be purchased on site from Dan O’Riordan, ESB Inniscarra; 087-9983879.
There were 3 salmon reported for the week ending 27 May. these were caught on shrimp.
There is very little angling pressure at the moment as the lower river is unfishable due to the drainage works in the town.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times. web:http://flyfishing-ireland.com
Kevin Lyons of Melview Lodge in Longford reports the piking in the Longford area…
Ronald Koek is all smiles with his Pike.
Piet Van Saase and friends Marnix, Stephan and Ronald were over for a Pike fishing holiday staying with Kevin and Jane at Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford. At times the weather was not the best for Pike fishing but the guys carried on regardless, they fished mainly lures both hard and soft along with a few dead bait sessions.
Stephan Woldhuis with his second of the day
The guys were up against it from the start with the bright and still sunny weather. However they fished on and despite the conditions and managed to catch some nice Pike during their stay. Piet has been over here a few times now and has caught some very nice fish in the past and this time decided to invite some new friends along to try the Pike fishing in Ireland. Great week lads and thanks for the jokes and the laugh, see you again next year.
Kevin has over 30 years experience of fishing in Ireland and is happy to offer a guided tour on your arrival, and to advise where the on-form waters in the area are. We can arrange your bait order so it’s here when you arrive. Melview offers free use of 17ft lake boats with engines to our guests (pay fuel only) and Kevin is happy to assist with any pre-baiting requests. Maps and other information regarding fishing are also available.
