Rory Dunne wind River Suck festival with 32.300kg

The Bill Cassidy reports on the Suck Valley Angling Hub and Connacht Match Group 3 Day Festival fished over the Bank Holiday weekend…

09 May: Our 3 Day Festival concluded on Monday in dramatic style. As temperatures soared over the weekend and so did the fishing also proving that this river is up there with the best as a premier match fishing facility in the country.

Day 1 saw Donamon fishing best with all pegs producing roach. Both Emlagh sections were fishing hard.

Day 1 results

Rory Dunne 14.425kg
Shane Dunne 12.675kg
Marcus Kirwan 8.525kg

Day 2 of the River Suck 3 Day Festival provided more twists and turns and the leader board tightened up. With soaring temperatures fish still fed, but maybe not in the quantities as the day before.

roach fishing

Mark Leonard won day 2 with a weight of 10.125kg from peg 28 on Donamon. Tommy Dowd was second with 9.975kg from peg 9 on Emlagh and 3rd was Tony Kersley with 8.525kg from peg 29 on donamon.

Going into the final day a number of anglers where in with a chance of winning. As the draw concluded our leader Rory Dunne drew end peg on Emlagh in the trees section. 2nd placed Shane Dunne was going to peg 7 on Emlagh and 3rd placed Tommy Dowd had drawn peg 30 on Donamon.

As the match started it soon became apparent that Rory was making the most of his end peg and as the day went on he was to become unstoppable, as all good anglers are when they draw a good peg. Shane was catching after a slowing start but with pike attacks etc his peg came and went. The battle for 3rd spot was also hotting up as Tommy Dowd was catching on Donamon, but with small fish only being caught he was going to struggle to hold on. Mark Leonard who was 4th going into the final day was starting to make his move and would turn in a fine display on a tough section on Emlagh (right).

At the all out there was only going to be 1 winner and that of course would be Rory Dunne who would weigh in a terrific 14kg to win the final day and seal victory in style. Shane Dunne would hold on to second place with a weight of 6.5kg and so it left 3rd place to be decided. Tommy Dowd would weigh in a 5kg weight from Donamon while Mark Leonard weighed in 7kg plus meaning mark prevailed and took 3rd place just pipping Tommy.

Overall top 3

  • Rory Dunne 32.300kg
  • Shane Dunne 23.775kg
  • Mark Leonard 21.300kg

Carrowmore unsettled by winds but the odd fish being caught

Ireland is located on the western extremity of Europe and for many years has been hailed as one of the world’s premium angling destinations. Historically, Ireland was noted for its salmon and trout fishing, but it has now developed an excellent reputation for the quality of its pike fishing.

Bangor Erris Angling reports that conditions have not suited the lake recently an angling has not been easy, and at times impossible…

06 May: Due to the weather conditions there was hardly any fishing on the lake. 2 fish landed  by Martin McDonnell, and Steve Sutton. Hopefully things will improve this coming week.

30 April: 3 Salmon were taken over weekend despite the unfavourable weather.

Water levels improving on Laune and salmon running

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association reports on the latest salmon catches on the river…

The Laune as well as other rivers in the south west have been impacted badly by high water levels this spring resulting in poor catches. Reports are of good fishing continuing in Killarney so we certainly have plenty fish running the Laune, we just need conditions to improve to increase our chances of meeting a few fish.

Fly fishing on the Laune

Up to 03 May, fishing on the Laune has been quiet, again due to lack of anglers fishing because of high water levels. There have been a few fish reported caught spinning and a few lost. Members Brian Mohaly & Damien O’ Brien fished the Laune at the end of April. Despite the high water they manged to meet one fish on the fly using a skagit head and T-Tips. Sadly the fish was lost after a brief battle. The river has dropped considerably since t and it is nohen and was at 1.5m on 03 May; okay order for fishing.

Water levels are currently reading 1.3 at Laune Bridge so hopefully fishing on the river will pick up now.

Low water on the Bandon but a few springers caught

Jason Nash from the Bandon Angling Association reports on recent conditions on the Bandon…

09 May: River levels have dropped to summer low levels and with it the catches of salmon. Some salmon are still running and a few springers were caught last week, mostly to spinner and bait.

Dredging for the Bandon Flood Relief Scheme has recommenced since May 1st which has reduced fishing opportunity on our lowest beat.

Rain is due on Friday so this may encourage better numbers to run again.

Attached once again is Anthony Buckley who has tagged out with his third retained fish of the season. At this stage I’m like a broken record, but… well done Anthony. Interestingly, this fish had a brush with a net at some stage of its journey from Greenland and was injured very badly.

03 May: Great news for club member, Robert Quin who caught these two fish up river on the fly. The 1st one weighing 10lb 6oz caught on Tuesday and the 2nd at 13lb caught on Wednesday. Well done Robert! On May first Jonathon Walsh had a super fish of 10lb.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Minister Denis Naughten Launches Funding for Local Environmental Initiatives

The Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Denis Naughten is today, 9th May 2018, launching the 2018 Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Environmental Partnership Fund.

This fund supports local environmental initiatives by communities, individuals and not-for-profit groups.

Last year, Minister Naughten secured increased funding for the LA21 Scheme to €460,000 and, this year, the Minister is maintaining this level of funding.  Funding provided by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment is matched by Local Authorities, and projects may also attract funding from other sources.

Minister Naughten

Launching the 2018 Scheme Minister Naughten stated: “Today is an important funding announcement for communities across the country that work hard on keeping our environment clean and protected.  Last year, the Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund helped finance over 800 small scale local environmental projects that made a real difference in our communities and showcased how small changes can make lasting improvements to our environment.”

“This year, I am pleased to maintain the increased level of funding that will support a wide variety of projects such as community gardens, allotments, compost schemes, rainwater harvesting schemes, educational initiatives and environmental exhibition,” he added.

Eligible projects are those that will support and complement, at local level, national environmental policies such as those on Waste, Biodiversity, Climate Change, Air, Water and Sustainable Development.

Groups seeking funding for eligible projects are invited to make an application to their local authority (application forms are available from Local Authorities).

Completed application forms should be returned to the relevant local authority by 5pm, 20 June 2018.

Application forms, local authority contacts, and further information on the LA21 Environmental Partnership Fund can be obtained from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment website: https://www.dccae.gov.ie/en-ie/environment/topics/environmental-protection-and-awareness/local-agenda-21-partnership-fund/Pages/default.aspx.

Mayfly scarce on Corrib after a cold Spring but trout happy to feed on olives

Eamon Walsh reports that Lough Corrib is still to come to life with the arrival of the much anticipated Mayfly.   Reports from around the lake suggest that the cold water temperatures are holding back its arrival for the time being.

Some anglers are reporting seeing only a scattering of fly on the water during the early part of the week, with the exception of some isolated areas. This did improve as the week progressed with good hatches of Olives being reported almost everywhere.    But wet fly fishing has been difficult to say the least.

Larry McCarty informs us that despite a very late start in the season Olive and buzzer fishing has produced some great catches. Things are starting to improve on Lough Corrib. Matthew Griffiths had a beautiful Corrib trout while fishing out of Corrib View Lodge with Larry McCarthy.

Gareth Jones, Sales Director with Airflo Fishing had a memorable trip to the mighty Lough Corrib, with his best catch being a superb 5lb 15oz brown, which went back like a rocket.

In the Corrnamona area Tom Sullivan highlights the difference one year can make.  Every year is different! Brothers, Chris and Craig Oliver, have been coming the same dates for the last 3 years always around the first weekend in May. Last year they hit good fishing on Mayfly experiencing big hatches of them when they visited as it was well up. Well not so for this year as there’s not a sign of Ephemera danica yet. However there have been some decent Olive hatches and the lads got good sport over the 2 days with a lot of action on the wets and plenty of fish in the pound and quarter to two pound range and other undersize fish.

On Sunday the 5th of May, Corrnamona & District Anglers held their annual Wet Fly competition, 32 anglers took part accounting for 25 trout.  With some lovely conditions on the morning, plenty of wind and cloud spreading from the west, many anglers expected an excellent day out.  With the majority of anglers concentrating on the North Lake, from Dooras to Carraig, those who ventured to the south side fared better.  Cormac Dunleavy was the eventual winner with 4 trout of just over 3kilo fishing out of Corrnamona Bay.

Reports coming to us from the Headford area are of tricky conditions during the week with some day of proving very wind.  This did however suit some traditional anglers who produced a lot of small fish to wet fly patterns.

With reports of some very mixed weather being forecast for the coming week, the arrival of the mayfly could well be delay for another while.

Gary Costelloe from Lakeland Angling Centre, Portacarron Bay  ( tel. 091 552121, [email protected] for accommodation and boats) was in touch to report on good fishing for guests at Lakeland.

Anglers fishing out of Lakeland Angling Centre have reported that Olives are still the favourite of the trout this week and only a  few Mayfly have been seen coming off Portacarron Bay so far.

Anthony Forster from Newcastle in the UK fished Lough Corrib with his dad for 4 days  and had 4/5 fish each day.

The two  Douwes, Douwe Van Sinderen  and Douwe Wiesrtra,  from The Netherlands,  on their second trip to Corrib this season had a much more productive couple of days than during  their March outing, the smile says it all below

Also fishing from Lakeland Angling Centre this week Peter Weisman from Switzerland trolling for Ferox had 4 fish the largest weighing in at 14 lbs.,

IFI officers are currently out and about carrying out Operation Ephemera – this involves spot checks on anglers to make sure regulations are being complied with. Over recent years anglers have been requesting more protection of trout stocks, with complaints of some taking undersize or too many fish. Anglers are reminded that they should be familiar with all byelaws pertaining to trout fishing and abide by these. Non-compliance can result in on-the-spot fines or worse!

For the Corrib catchment, a catch limit of 4 trout per angler per day is in force. Only one of these trout may be over 4.54kgs/10lbs weight. The minimum size limit is 13 inches/33cm. Anglers trolling are restricted to 2 rods per angler, up to a maximum of 3 rods per boat. Anglers are also reminded that it is a legal requirement to wear a lifejacket or personal flotation device!

Mask fishing well to variety of methods as international competition approaches

Ronan Cusack reports from Lough Mask.

Tension is building around Lough Mask as the ITFFA Spring international approaches in a few days. The four teams have arrived in good spirits and are busy preparing for the big event. The two official practice days are on Wednesday / Thursday with the competition being held on Friday. Conditions over the past few days have been mainly windy with a mix of sunshine and rain. Overall the fishing has been very good, with fish being caught on a variety of methods.

Ballinrobe & District Anglers held the annual David Walsh Memorial Cup on Sunday last, which was run on a catch-and-release basis. This competition is a pairs event and was supported by 78 anglers on the day. First place went to Aidan Heffernan from Kildare and Peter McKenna from Sligo with 11 trout measuring 386cm. Second place went to David Egan from Ennis and Seamus Kelly from Ballina with 9 fish measuring 295 cm. Third positions went to Ronan Cusack Ballinrobe and Eddy Harte from Sligo with 6 trout measuring 215cm. Stephen Browne from Lough Conn won the longest fish prise, with a trout of 56cm. Aidan Heffernan also won the best individual Ballinrobe angler.

Regular visitor to Mask Martin McCoy had 7 good trout on Saturday last on a mix of wets and dries.

Olive hatches over the past week have been quite good with the warmer days producing the bigger hatches.
