A winning catch
Paul does it again at Inniscarra

It’s a double win for Paul Leese who wins the O’Callaghans Feeder Cup with a total weight of 57kg over the 3 days! Fellow County Cavan anglers Brenton Sweeney and Neil Mazurek took 2nd and 3rd place with Peter Mills finishing in 4th.
Full results table
Congratulations to all the winners and everyone who took part but especially Paul who played out an awesome performance on his first return to Inniscarra since he fished for silver with Team Ireland in 2014. After high water levels at the end of last week and possible flood warnings everything turned out okay and the fishing turned out to be fantastic. The sections remained consistent for both festivals with lots or roach and hybrids. On the last three days alone the 31 anglers have caught over 978kg, that’s 10.52kg per man per day; terrific weights in match conditions.

Inniscarra Lake Tourism Ltd would like to thank all those who travelled to Coachford Co. Cork to participate, Kevin Gray Match Organiser, helpers and photographers Pat Falvey, Peter William Turner, Tracey Martin and Eileen Martin of O’Callaghans Bar & Guest House our sponsors and hosts.

IFI has established a National Bass Programme to collect data on bass in order to provide scientific advice to support management and conservation of Ireland’s bass resource. Bass is Ireland’s only marine fish species which is managed for angling. The programme is being developed to determine the status of bass stocks and also to improve understanding of their ecology and biology in Ireland for the long-term sustainability of the species. Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Leixlip and District Anglers Association fished the Hawtorn Cup recently in ideal conditions…

22 April: The Hawthorn Cup was fished today and what started out as a damp morning turned into a sunny day which ensured a smile was kept on the faces of all. Water levels were perfect, the river temperature was higher than at any time over the last few months. Fishing was steady all day with good returns from several anglers.

TRout

The result was quite tight in the end with two anglers fighting it out for top spot. In the end, with a total of 78 inches, Gianluca had it won by 2.5 inches over Edward in second with 75.5 inches. Jason was third with 49 inches.

Very well done Gianluca. A very deserved win that he worked hard for and well done to all who fished on such a lovely day.

Irish Angling Update – 26 April 2018

The River Bandon
The River Bandon earlier this week.

We had some incredible weather in the end last weekend. Most areas enjoyed at least one day of good, warming sunshine, and the unique smell of barbeques firing up wafted about the country. But it didn’t really last and rain soon followed. Along with colder temperatures. The best of the weather probably didn’t coincide with the best of the fishing in the last week though, and it seems it was probably a bit too bright when the sun was shining!

There weren’t many anglers out on the Drowes last week and so the catch, which included some early grilse, is a little lower than we’d expect given the conditions on the river. On the Moy heavy rain put the river in flood for a number of days. As it cleared salmon began to be caught and the week ended with 31 fish reported. Fishing at Delphi was described as steady as spring arrived in the valley last week. There’s always the chance of a good salmon at this time of the year, and a lamb on your back cast can’t be ruled out either. In Connemara high tides at Costello and Fermoyle are expected to improve the fishing there following the landing of their first salmon of the season on Wednesday, 25 April. Staying in Galway there were 4 fish from the Galway Fishery in the last few days. Moving south, there were a few more fish taken from the Feale on fly and spinner, though as levels there rose again conditions are more suited to spinning only now. The Owenmore reported its first few sea trout of the season and fishing in the river is expected to be good as levels there are topped up by the rain. Springers to 14lb were landed on fly at Lough Currane. Before the weekend the lake was almost unfishable but conditions improved from Saturday on. The Ilen had one salmon and a good few sea trout in the last week, while there was just one fish reported from the Bandon and the Lee reported 6 salmon in high water. Water levels on the Munster Blackwater are improving and fishing has picked up again on the river.

pike
Team Rock and Roll – Lukasz Sankiewicz & Bartosz Nieciecki – are the World Cup Winners 2018. They also win Catch of the Week for their 114.5cm pike

This year’s Lough Ree International Pike Festival & World Cup had its best single day of fishing ever when 21 fish over 100cm caught on Thursday, 20 April. Team Rock and Roll – Lukasz Sankiewicz & Bartosz Nieciecki, were the winners of this 3 day event with 312.5cm (for their 3 best fish) and they also won the biggest fish competition on 114.5cm. The rest of our pike reports are also from the Shannon system this week. There were big fish on Derg in the last few days and also in the Longford area of the catchment. Unfortunately the Go Hire Pike Championship final was fished in bright sunshine on Saturday and so the fish they met were a bit smaller but it was still a good day with 163 pike entered.

There have been few reports from Corrib lately, water temperatures are only just reaching 9C, well back on normal for the time of year, as we await the main hatch of olives. Lough Mask was in good form over the past few days despite the recent return to cold and unsettled weather. Reasonable hatches of sedge have been complemented by the odd olive and Campto buzzer in recent days, keeping trout interested and on the move.

Inniscarra Reservoir had a chance to shine again as some great catches were weighed in at the festivals fished there in the last number of days. Paul Leese had a great start to the David Bacon Feeder Only Festival with 23.240kg and he ended up winning the 3 day event with 57.120kg. At Portumna the 3 day Curley’s Festival was won by Julian Kendrick. The Grand Canal at Edenderry fished well at the weekend and despite blustery conditions some good catches, which included some lovely tench and bream, were weighed in.

Like grandfather, like grandson was the story from Cork Harbour where a a young Sean Ryan had bass on fly and lure. These are amongst the first bass reported from the area this year. Staying afloat the Wicklow Bay Sea Angling Club reported tough fishing in the first leg of the Leinster boat league fished in Kilmore Quay. The sun was, again, blamed for this. We also have shore angling reports from Youghal and Donegal Bay where competition anglers are getting some decent fishing. Wexford had some of the best reports and great bass fishing was enjoyed by angling guide Sid Jones.

And now the weather…

The forecast from Met Eireann isn’t great and the outlook is for temperatures below normal and cold enough at night for some rural grass frosts. Some sunny spells most days, but there’ll be showers too, some heavy with hail and a risk of thunder. Still cool and changeable for the first half of next week. At least the sun won’t scare away the fish this weekend…

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Good bassing reported from Wexford coast

Angling guide, Sid Jones reports on some great bass fishing from Wexford…

bass
A good fat bass – just over 60cm

Finally after what felt like the longest winter since time began I finally had a decent opportunity to get among some bass. The recent summer-like weather was matched with decent water temperatures and good clarity. During a brilliant session with a great friend of mine we managed 14 bass, 7 each with two double hook up’s.

bass
Another decent bass – a bit skinnier though

I added another 25 bass to my seasons tally over another few sessions. The bass were ranging in size from small but feisty schoolies up to lean 67cm which was probably after spawning.

The best fish throughout the sessions was a cracking fat 60cm bass. A very thick set fish which outweighed all the others caught.

All fish were released after a quick photo.

New members are always welcome to Edenderry Coarse Angling Club.

Nine permanent match stretches occupy the length of the Grand Canal within 15 km of Edenderry town. This section of canal corridor is unconfined by lock gates for 31 kilometres. Each stretch is permanently marked and contains a minimum of 25 pegs, spaced at 30 metre intervals. The towpaths are driveable and adjacent car parking facilities are provided. The towpaths, like the canal itself, are maintained to the highest standard by Waterways Ireland and Edenderry coarse angling club, while the angling conditions are beyond parallel. A vast number of mixed coarse fish have been stocked into the canal over the past ten years – the health and population status of which is regularly assessed.

Apart from the 262 permanent swims that have been created for the match angler on this unique fishery, a number of stretches have been prepared to cater for the pleasure fisherman and the junior angler. Included among these is the famous Edenderry Branch Line. Fished 12 months a year, this highly productive venue regularly produces catches in excess of 50lb per session. Bream, tench, roach, rudd, hybrids, carp, perch and gudgeon are the principal fish species present.

Thanks to IFI (inland fisheries ireland) for their continuous hard work and development of projects in the area who without their hard work an event like this wouldn’t be possible to be held in the area.

Last but by no means least we all thank the Leyden family who allowed us to use their pub for the draw and presentation. Mary Leyden kindly provided refreshments after the competition which is greatly appreciated by all the anglers.

Fermoy wins Munster Council Team of Four league

Five Munster Clubs started Munster Council‘s Team of Four league back in February. The final was fished at the weekend in Oaklands….

Oaklands Lake, New Ross was the Waterford venue for the final league match of the Munster Teams 2018. There were just 2 points separating Munster CAC (A) and Fermoy going into the final competition. The lake fished really well with almost 475kg caught.

South Munster won the day with a great result of 7pts but they were too far behind at this stage in the league to catch up.

Fermoy CAC managed to reverse the points difference on Munster CAC, and so they came away winners of the Munster Teams League 2018.

Pawel Swistun is individual winner of the Munster Teams League 2018.
