Camlin Angling Club – recent pike fishing activity

Jacek Gorni
Jacek Gorni with a good Ree Pike

Water levels are low throughout Camlin system down to and around the Lough Ree area. This accompanied with a lot of excessive weed growth is making the fishing difficult in some areas. That being said there has been some excellent pike fishing of late. The use of surface lures provides for great fun in shallow bays often giving some spectacular takes. This has been a popular method in and around North Lough Ree and while a lot of jack pike are being caught the more persistent anglers are catching some good double figure fish. There were a lot of good pike caught throughout the lake at the recent Camlin Anglers Pike Classic.

Emma Stanley reports that areas such as Lough Derg, Banagher, Clonfert, Meelick and Shannonbridge are fishing very well this week regards Pike with catches up to 25lbs being reported.  The general consensus is that there is no shortage of Pike in the Lower Shannon River Basin District at the moment.

TJ from TJ’s Angling says that in yesterday’s bright calm, conditions that deep trolling was doing the business. Often deep trolled fish come up experiencing a version of the bends, or barotrauma. This happens when the fish is brought to the surface faster than its body and swim bladder can adjust resulting in the fishing getting “gassed up”.  the body can be visibly bloated and sometimes the swim bladder might be visible in the mouth or the eyes bulge. Anglers can help fish like this recover faster by returning them to the depth at which they were caught using a tool called a descending device. A DIY version can be made from an inverted barbless hook with a weight. With this device, secure the weighted hook in the lip, allow the weighted hook to carry the fish to the desired depth, and release the fish with a sharp tug on the line. Big fish need more weight – allow about 8oz per lb of fish.

The Dream of Discovering Ireland, A French Anglers' Tale

We have just received a report from Yves Achard and members of the sporting section of ACBB (Association of Clubs of Boulogne Billancourt) who visited the Boyne Valley in late May.  The association is located near Paris and is more than 50 years old. It organizes lots of activities for its members including courses in casting, fly tying and fly fishing.  More experienced members support beginners in their learning of fishing and share good times between members. The well-known members of the club include Pierre CAILLAU and Pierre AFFRE.
For the past few years, the association has embarked on a weekly fishing trip. Making their first trips on the French rivers in Limousin, Franche Comté, Vosges .., not always easy to organize and find a place for a fishing trip for a group of 10 to 15 people. After these first successful experiments, they tried to travel to more exotic locations by travelling abroad. In 2015, the first foreign destination was the Ribnik in Bosnia, a destination discovered a few years ago with Slovenian friends, this first trip abroad was a success and everyone’s opinion, an experience to be renewed.

Yves tell us that “this year 2017, the association decided to discover Ireland. I had wonderful memories, myself, of a three-day trip in May 1999, fishing on the Boyne and its tributaries. It was an ideal destination for a group of fishermen, with plenty of possibilities to leave everyone on the water’s edge. The project was launched …… the success of the first trip and the dream of discovering Ireland and the Irish trout did the rest, we reached 20 people …. A real challenge to succeed in a fishing trip with such an important group. We had chosen to come late May hoping that the May flies would be on the rivers and lakes.

After getting up at dawn, we landed on Saturday, May 20th at 8:10 am at Dublin airport, time to take the rental cars and head to the Co Meath village of Donore (45 minutes from Dublin) to take possession of our rooms and drop off our luggage in the excellent Daly’s Inn, Guest House. After a quick meal which we enjoyed, we took the afternoon to discover the Boyne River on some beats near the Guest House. On Sunday morning, we had debriefing around breakfast to organize the day and establish the rules for the following days. We had organized a guide for the start of our fishing on the Sunday.

The first day was excellent, the more experienced fishermen had good fishing and the beginners took their first fish in the magnificent scenery of the Irish countryside with Irish guides who were very competent, very available and extremely kind (a great Thank you all). It was also an opportunity for the first group to discover lake fishing on the Lough Sheelin, exceptional sensations, it is an extraordinary fishing. The day by boat with the guide John Baker is unforgettable for me, and despite the language barrier a lot of exchanges and complicity in the approach of fishing, just a regret from John to me with some mis-timed strikes ….

On Monday we managed by ourselves but could see that we needed some assistance with the following days . A big thank you for the availability and help of David BYRNE, Inland Fisheries Ireland who came to our assistance on Tuesday morning at our hotel. David gave us the information, documents and fishing club contacts allowing each group (4 anglers per car) to organize in full autonomy to buy the fishing permits and to locate the best fishing stretches.  All the rest of the stay was nothing but fun and thrills at the water’s edge, lots of gorgeous wild fish and very combative. Nice catches neighbouring or even exceeding 50 cm with a special mention to Ivan with a fish more than 65 cm on the Lough Sheelin.

Regularly incredible scores of more than 50 catches per day and per fisherman on the Boyne and Blackwater. It was with regret that we had to make up our minds to put our things on Friday night to leave this pretty country. And again very much thanks to David Byrne, Peter Cunningham and John Baker for their kindness and availability and who helped us throughout the stay. Proof of how this destination was greatly enjoyed, is that members of the group return as early as this September …… fishing on the Boyne and its tributaries”.

A big thanks to Yves and the association members for their visit, kind comments, report and fabulous  photos. We look forward to seeing you all again during your next visit! Among the comments made by the whole group was a recognisable description of our fabulous Lough Sheelin.
“The Lough Sheelin: A wonderful lake, bewitching, frustrating, with exceptional emotions and dazzling fish ……. The evening blow, May flies by millions ……. It can be said without exaggeration that it snowed”.

Salmon running at Delphi but hard caught

Catch Photo Release salmon
A salmon is released at Delphi #CPRsavesfish

David McEvoy reports from Delphi

17 July: Week 28 was frustrating from a salmon angling viewpoint, with plenty of fish running but they were playing very hard to get. The water was quite low until Saturday when it rose to 35, after 15mms on Friday night. A good number of fish were lost but there was definitely no great take on them until Saturday when we had the higher water.

Werner Fasching had the first of the week on the 10th, a grilse of 3lbs8ozs from Boat Point on Finlough on a Black and Yellow. Marcolo Hunfan had a fish of approx. 4lbs from the Stream on Fin on the 11th on a Cascade. Dermot O’Farrell also landed his first ever, a nice fish of 4lbs10ozs from Whin Pool on a Collie Dog. Ian Morrison had a grilse of approx. 4lbs from the Mouth of the Glenummera on Doolough of approx. 4lbs on a Willie Gunn.

Saturday the water was up and there was definitely more movement on fish with six landed. Michael Righton had two, one from the Turn Pool of 4lbs5ozs and one from the Grilse Pool of approx. 5lbs both on a Sunrae Shadow. Charles Finch also had two, one of approx. 2lbs from the Bridge Pool and one of approx. 3.5lbs from the Turn, both on a Red Frances. Paul Wymes had one of 3lbs15ozs from the Whin Pool on a Willie Gunn and Michael Van Mourik had one from the Turn of 4lbs12ozs on a Lemon Grey. There were also a good number of fish hit and missed on Saturday, but the later session was difficult as the wind died and the dreaded midge appeared, which made fishing rather uncomfortable to say the least.

The first few days of this week are promised fine which will test our anglers this week, but more broken weather is promised from mid-week on, so I will be expecting great things.

Angling improves with a drop of rain at Owenmore Fishery

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports:

16 July: Thursday we had a man on the Lake at 8am and by 10 am he had 7 trout landed up to 3 lbs. The wind changed direction and started to blow gales so he had to come in off it.

The mist came down and it turned to rain on Friday and didn’t stop until Sat evening resulting in a terrific flood. When the water was s very low on Thursday the bottom 3 pools filled with seatrout and we had a good run of grilse with them. On Friday night when the water was still low the lads had terrific night fishing.

There were some good fish met on Saturday both seatrout and grilse but the wind changed to northwest in the evening and the whole river just went dead.

The water was a little bit on the high side on Sunday morning but there was still plenty of fish seen running. There were no grilse landed today but there was a few seatrout caught.

There are heavy showers forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday which should see the river fish until at least Friday.

Angling Notes: Arrival of non-native pink salmon causes unease

Over the past two weeks there have been several reports of non-native pink salmon in Galway, Mayo and Donegal rivers. The species, which is of Pacific source, originates from the west coasts of the United States and Canada as well as Northern Asia. Their appearance is of concern as it may impact Ireland’s own Atlantic salmon species…
