Inland Fisheries Ireland and An Taisce host nature walk at Glenties Hatchery, Donegal

Inland Fisheries Ireland and An Taisce recently partnered to host a guided nature walk on the Owenea River in Glenties for members of the public. The event was held beside the Glenties Hatchery and was open to those interested in learning more about the wildlife living in their local stretch of river.

Over 30 people participated in the two hour nature walk and demonstration where they enjoyed an examination of the insects and other creatures that live in the river. Assistant Inspector Owen Kelly of Inland Fisheries Ireland presented samples from three local rivers – the Abbey River near Ballyshannon, the Laghey River outside Donegal Town and the Owenea River itself.

The participants reviewed the water samples using microscopes and learn about water chemistry and macroinvertebrates. Mayflies, stoneflies, caddis flies and freshwater shrimp were all identified in the samples while an aquarium which contained juvenile trout and salmon helped explain the life cycle of fish to the children.

A demonstration on electro-fishing techniques and survey methods produced good numbers of salmon fry and parr fish which were placed in the aquarium for safe keeping before being returned to the river after the event. The public heard how the information gathered using electrofishing helps to determine the conservation limits of Ireland’s salmonid river systems.

Themes explored during the field trip included the life cycle of salmon, trout, sea trout, artic charr, freshwater pearl mussel and the threats that are facing the European eel. Discussions with attendees also took place on the threats and impacts facing the future survival of salmon, global warming, pollution and bye catch of other fishing industries.

Owen Kelly, Assistant Inspector at Inland Fisheries Ireland said: “We were delighted to partner with An Taisce on this initiative for the second year in a row which helps to inform the public of local aquatic life and habitat. Our local rivers are full of life and this initiative aims to engage the local community around the fisheries resource and highlight the importance of its protection and conservation.”

Pike to 25lb were landed

There were 3 challenges set on the day. The main one was to catch, photo and release 1 pike, 1 perch, 2 coarse fish and the “joker” fish of the day was a trout. The joker is a fish that can double your total score after the pike perch and coarse fish have been caught. The other challenges were most pike and most trout.

Ready for the off

There was a total of 25 anglers taking part and we got the competition underway at 11am and due to finish at 5pm.

A number of pike, 27, were caught during the competition the largest of which was estimated at 25lb and a PB for the angler, Tomas. There was also plenty of roach, rudd and hybrids caught along with a small number of perch. The main competition was won by Ian Burton who also won the prize for most pike, landing 6 on the day. No trout were caught on the day with little or no rise noted. All fish were released.

This competition is open to all and is free to enter. All safety gear must be used and promoting safety is the focal point of these meets. If you would like to attend these meets to see what way we are set up then you are very welcome. Visit www.irishkayakangling.com for all the info.

Grilse run Currane but wild winds prevent anglers making most of it

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane where grilse provided some sport over the Bank Holiday weekend…

01/06/17: Lough Currane was all quiet on the SW front in all departments, even though there was a nice breeze from the SW and followed by a nice drop of  rain, how much I will give you all the facts tomorrow, so on that note I will hand you over to your guide who is on top of the world, so click and enjoy. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 1.5mm. Maximum air temperature 16.6c.

02/06/17:  A fine 8 ½ lbs. Salmon was caught on the Commeragh river by Mr. Martin Coveny. Meanwhile the six boats out manipulating and stimulating their flies and lures today on the Big Lake/ Lough Currane, left a lot to be desired this day on the Waterville Fishery and why, well its simple because of their inability to catch a wild Atlantic Salmon or catch one of Lough Curran’s majestic specimen Sea Trout, need I say more. Wind West light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 12.1mm. Maximum air temperature 14.7c,

03/06/17: Now today’s action or I should say the lack of it  because this bank Holiday Saturday there were 8 boats out manipulating and I can say without any fear of contradiction they all failed in every department, as majority of anglers would say that’s fishing! Wind W fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 4.4mm. Maximum air temperature 15.8c.

Martin, Dave, Bob.
Martin, Dave, Bob.

4/6/17 All headlines come from the Bungalow, the home of Lough Currane Salmon fishing and for good reason, there was some mighty Grilse fishing today, particularly one boat, but we leave the best to last. First in my striking zone was UK angler Peter Morris from Newcastle, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Peter caught a fine Salmon Grilse on the troll. Now to catch of the day, we start in the C&R department, Mr. Dave Holmes was King of the Grilse today, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Bob Priestley, Dave caught 4 fine Salmon Grilse on the troll and sportingly put 1 Grilse back to fight another day. Now staying with the Same boat and Gillie, but a different client, Mr. Martin Coveny, caught a fine Salmon Grilse on the troll and all in all you can say today was a cracker of a day for the clients and the Gillie’s and fair play to them all. Wind SW light to fresh with good cloud and heavy rain this evening. yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 1.8mm. Maximum air temperature 15.0c

5/6/17 Lough Currane was on the quiet side after yesterdays brilliant action, but to be honest that’s not surprising with a NE wind blowing and rain pouring down for the best part of the day and it was very cold with a maximum air temperature of 9c but felt like 6c. That ends the excuses for the Lough Currane anglers, so on that note we head upstream and to the Commeragh River and there was one angler manipulating his skill and needs no excuses because the angler in question, Mr Martin Coveny, caught and released a fine 6 lbs. Salmon and two Sea Trout for his efforts, so congratulations to Martin for keeping the Waterville Fishery flag flying high this June Bank holiday Monday. Yesterdays weather. Amount of rainfall 12 mm. Maximum air temperature 14.4c.

Hugh Brennan
Hugh Brennan

6/6/17 Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong and gusty wind from the NW added with heavy down pours, but this didn’t deter a few boats from going out, but all the Salmon headlines go to Dublin Angler Mr. Hugh Brennan, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a 5 lbs. Grilse on the troll, where the other boats are concerned it was all quiet on the SW front. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 7.3mm

7/6/17 Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong SE wind blowing with heavy rain, so as you can imagine my Noble anglers were in a miserable mood in the communication department and one can only come to one conclusion they failed in all departments. Yesterdays Weather, amount of rainfall 1.4mm. Maximum air temperature 14.3c.

 Logan Ratzlaff
Logan Ratzlaff

8/6/17 Lough Currane on the wild side again with a strong wind from the West, wild West or not, all reels were firing as my noble anglers procured a couple of Salmon Grilse, so straight to the action, French angler Mr. Pierre Loyer while fishing with is Gillie, caught a fine 4 lbs. Grilse on the troll. Staying in the trolling department, US angler Mr. Logan Ratzlaff from Virginia, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 5 lbs. Salmon Grilse. All in all considering the rough conditions the Currane anglers did well. Wind West fresh to strong with heavy down pours and I mean heavy. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 9.3 mm. Maximum air temperature 14.5 c and just for the record the amount of rainfall so far this month is 49.2mm.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Rising water spoils weekend on Laune but some good fish about

Billy Downes, Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association, reports that as of Tuesday 6th of June the Laune was at 1.3m and still rising which is good news for this the week as river was getting a bit on the low side…

During the past week a few fish were met each day but not as many as the previous week.

Richard Barry has only fished the Laune three times so far but he has managed to meet and lose three fish. A bit of a record. The most recent one was last Friday a fine fish well into double figures only to break on him after twenty minutes.

Over the weekend the fishing was very disappointing with the nets off Saturday to Monday. There was a considerable angling effort but no news of fish being met or landed by members and a good few visiting anglers. There was rising water and that is never good.

salmon
Paul Murphy fished the Laune on Tuesday and was rewarded with a 14 lbs bar of silver

Prospects: Beautiful water the river will go above 1.3m giving ideal conditions for all methods. But not much sign of fish entering the system and one has to allow for the fact that the commercial nets will be operational from Tuesday to Friday.

Billy Downes,  Secretary
Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association

Just a few salmon from Inniscarra last week

The Inniscarra Fishery on the River Lee saw 4 salmon landed for the week, weighing 11lbs, 11.5lbs, 13lbs and 9lbs.  Three were landed by a local angler on shrimp and the remaining fish was landed also by a local angler spinning.  Water levels were high.

There were no catches reported by club anglers.

The River Lee drains a catchment of 484 square miles of which much is taken up by two large reservoirs. Salmon Angling is confined to an 8 mile stretch from Inniscarra dam to Cork city.

Inniscarra Fishery

This salmon fishery is located between Cork City and the dam at Inniscarra (9 miles). The fishery is run by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and an ESB permit is required. There is a fair run of fish with a very good grilse run dependent on water. Permits can be purchased on site from Dan O’Riordan, ESB Inniscarra; 087-9983879.

Lee Salmon Anglers Club

The Lee Salmon Anglers club was established in 1967. It was formed by a group of anglers interested in protecting and promoting the sport of salmon and trout angling on the river Lee. Day tickets available: http://www.leesalmonanglers.ie/

Ilen River doing well after rain, 30 salmon to 15lb reported

Ilen River

Coomhola River

2 salmon caught for the week, best was 7lbs landed on a worm by a club angler.

Glengarriff River

2 salmon landed for the week, best was 7lbs landed on a worm by a club angler.

Mealagh River

No report of catches.

Go fishing…

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.
