Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane which was busy over the Easter weekend and some fine salmon were landed…
19/4/17 Lough Currane was on the quiet side in the Salmon department, but the same couldn’t be said on the Sea Trout department with two cracking Sea Trout caught. So lets get to the Sea Trout action. We start in the C&R fly department, local angler Mr. Martin Lanigan O’Keeffe, while fly fishing with is Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught fine 5 lbs. Sea Trout and just for the record that’s the first Sea Trout recorded caught on the fly this season. Now we head for the hired out boat and trolling department of [email protected]
Andy with the first specimen Sea Trout of 2017 with te Premier Sea Trout Lake in Ireland in the background
Fish of the day goes to Northern Angler Mr. Andrew Wishart, who caught a cracker of a specimen Sea Trout of 6 ½ lbs. Wind W veered at times NW with reasonable cloud at times. Weather, maximum air temperature 12.4.c.
20/4/17 Lough Currane was like a mirror this morning with bright sunshine, it was good to see 10 boats heading out, but they had to wait for a bit of a breeze which eventually came in the afternoon from the West, come 5 pm this evening their Boats were as empty as when they left their port of call and as you can see the pictures tell the story and confirms my Noble Anglers are exonerated for failing in their duties in procuring a Wild Atlantic Salmon or a Specimen Sea Trout. Wind as all ready stated. Weather, maximum air temperature 13.3c.
Looks beautiful, but not what the anglers want to see
21/4/17 The weather takes all the head lines again today which is not surprising with the sun blazing down on Lough Currane, as you can see by the photo. Anglers that were out manipulating with their flies and lures, can say they are exonerated from criticism for the lack of fish without any fear of contradiction and as I always say a picture always tells the story. Just for the record there were 4 boats out and there was a light wind from the West. Weather, maximum air temperature 15.6c.
22/4/17 We start with the Sad news that Lough Currane has lost another great Angler, Mr. Jim Linehan of Kanturk RIP Co Cork and Ballinskelligs, sadly past away yesterday and on behalf of all the anglers of Waterville and the good people of Kerry we send our sincere sympathies to all his Family and friends. Jim Fished Lough Currane for many years and loved fishing out on the Sea especially Ballinskelligs Bay and not forgetting the Lakes of Killarney, all I can say is one thing, Jim you maybe gone but you certainly won’t be forgotten. Now today’s action and it all comes from the Bungalow, German angler, Mr. Axel ZurBrugge fishing out of the Butler arms caught a fine 9 ½ lbs. Salmon on the troll, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and for the rest of the angling community they just watched with envy. Wind W light to calm this morning and light to fresh in the afternoon. Maximum air temperature 15.7c.
23/4/17 There were six boats manipulating this day and I can say they failed miserably in their duties in all departments, but to be fair first thing this morning the lake was calm when the wind eventually did come it was light to calm from West with reasonable cloud cover at times. Come evening my Noble Anglers headed for the Bars and Swallowed their beer down fast and contemplated on their failures and as you can see by the picture, Swallows have a big talk too!
Swallows
24/4/17 Lough Currane was on the quiet side in all departments. Wind NE and gusty with reasonable cloud cover and in the words of local Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com it was brutal out there and very cold and just a few boats out 4 to be precise. Maximum air temperature 14.0c.
25/4/17 Lough Currane anglers that were manipulating their flies or lures today, were not letting their fingers do the talking at the end of their day, I hear you say why? well there could be two reasons, firstly they are ashamed of their performance or their lack of skill to procure a wild Atlantic Salmon, or secondly their fingers were so cold at the end of the day they couldn’t text, which is not surprising because it was dam cold out there and for good reason, there was a NE wind blowing light to fresh, so I would say that is their excuse for their failure to communicate. Just for the record there were four boats out fighting the elements. Maximum air temperature 12.4c.
Father daughter double
26/4/17 Today was Father and Daughters Day on Lough Currane and for good reason, Aemilia Timmermans, while fishing with her Father Mr. William Timmermans of Holland and Waterville and fishing out of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught two fine Salmon on the troll and both were in the 7 lbs. class, staying with the Dutch connection, Mr. Tim Van Der Laan of Holland, caught a fine Sea Trout on the fly, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Terence Wharton Snr and for the rest of the participating anglers all failed miserably in their duties. Wind NNE light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover and cold but at least one boat was on fire with activity. Rainfall 2.0mm, Maximum air temperature 9.7c
27/4/17 Lough Currane was all quiet after yesterdays fine catch, there were at least 10 boats manipulating this day and I can say without any fear of contradiction none of today’s anglers had a Father and Daughters touch in the Salmon department, so we head for the Sea Trout department, German Angler fishing out of www.butlerarms.com Mr. Axel ZurBrugge caught a fine 2 lbs. Sea Trout on the troll, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Wind NE light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover, plus the odd shower. Weather, 0.1mm of rainfall, maximum air temperature 10.9c.
That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts. Vincent Appleby
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. David Tantrum reports that Carrigavantry and Knockaderry are well stocked and double figure catches are the norm for a days fishing.
Carrigavantry has a massive olive hatch but the trout seem to be selecting the buzzers. Knockaderry has a rise to small black buzzers and the trout are concentrating on them and immature corixae.

Plenty of boats available. Evening rise starting, on warmer days.
Visitors are asked to play the the fish as quickly as possible and to release them following the guide lines on the IFI web site. Such splendid trout need respect to allow somebody else the privilege of catching wiser fish!

Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore. The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet. Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!
Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers, sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.
New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.
Ken O’Neill, IFI Limerick met Eddie O’Neill (no relation)while on patrol last week. Eddie was having a great day out on the Cappa Pier but the highlight was catching a a fine Conger Eel on using a mackerel fillet. Eddie said that it was an epic battle to land this massive conger, and it was even more challenging to unhook him and return him safely to the Shannon Estuary.
Lough Melvin was fairly quiet but there was 5 salmon caught trolling. Brian McEvoy recorded a salmon and John Flanagan caught 2 for his days fishing and we await details of the other 2 captors.

With very little rainfall to speak of between Monday 17th to Sunday 23rd April, the Drowes continued to run at low levels once again. The gauge at the Four Masters Bridge only read 0.45m all week. Despite the low water conditions, there was a fair catch of salmon over the week. Funnily enough all the salmon were recorded over the week with none at the weekend.
On Monday, Carl Hegarty logged a 7¼lb salmon caught on prawn from the Otter Hole. John Baxter reported a 7lb salmon caught on a fly from the Blackwater and Joe Broderick caught and released a 12lb salmon caught on shrimp from the Sea Pools.
On Tuesday, Columba Fitzpatrick recorded a 9lb salmon caught on worm from the Island Pool and Brian McClintock accounted for a 9lb salmon caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from Red Roof.
On Thursday, Paul McCausland recorded an 8lb salmon caught and released on a spinner from Red Roof and William Rainey accounted for an 8lb salmon caught on worm from the Sea Pool.
There was a further salmon caught on Friday and we await details of the same.

I also mentioned last week our pals Val Wynne and Owen McEnteggary were back on Lene.
