Leixlip and District Anglers Association were on the Ryewater at the weekend…
A drizzly morning greeted the Leixlip Anglers for their first competition (social gathering) of the year. However as usual such weather would not dampen spirits nor deter us from a bit of fishing. The Rye has been fishing very well for the past couple of weeks so a good day was expected. As usual always a good turn out for the first get together of the year with over 20 anglers out for the day. A good return of fish as well with more than 50 fish over the measurable 8 inches caught and countless small trout & salmon par.
The sun did shine, just not for long
The Trophy was won in the end by Eduard Dondea with a 12.5 inch trout as his biggest, Gianluca Paolella also caught a 12.5 inch trout but came 2nd on count back to Eddies next biggest fish, Dermot Mitchell was 3rd with a 12 inch trout, very well done to Eduard and all who got out for a lovely days fishing.
The next comp is the Hawthorn Cup which is scheduled during April hope to see you all there. in the mean time here’s a few photos to wet the appetite. Also the league table has begun for this year check out the league table page.
The Ryewater is a fly only river. Leixlip and District Angling Association control the stretch of the Rye Water from Kellystown Lane to Leixlip Village. Day tickets are available for visiting anglers who wish to fish the Rye Water. They can be obtained from The Leixlip Amenities Centre. Tel: 01 624 3050
Ronan Cusack of IFI Galway reports from the shores of Lough Mask…
Two anglers got the surprise of their lives on Mask this week, when they realised what they had just hooked. Young Logan McCrea of Southside Anglers was trout fishing with his father Conor last weekend when he caught what turned out to be a Salmon, which is not something you would expect on Lough Mask.
A couple of day’s later, local angler Sean Maloney was wet-fly fishing at the opposite end of the Lake and also landed a Salmon. For years salmon have been blocked from accessing Lough Mask by a gate, or grid in Cong Village, but sometimes if high water levels coincide with the run of Salmon, some manage to jump over the grid and make their way up into Lough Mask. Anglers are reminded that the salmon regulations apply to these silvery vagrants and any salmon caught without a licence should be returned unharmed.
John Summerville beat Jackie 6-2
Headford anglers Kevin Crowley and Conor Ledwith had a good day on Mask over the weekend with some nice trout on wets up to 2.5lbs. Well known duo Jackie Coyne and John Summerville paired up on Saturday last and finished with 8 trout pulling wets (best fish 1.75lbs). John was delighted to say that he finally got the edge over good friend Jackie, beating him 6–2 on the day. Mike Coyne from Connemara fished most days over the past week and reported some excellent sport in shallow water. Kevin Egan and Michael Vahey from Ballinrobe fished for a few hours on Sunday afternoon and reported meeting good numbers of small trout. Denis Kelleher also had a good day on Sunday landing six to himself (Best fish 2lbs).
Kevin Crowley gets one in the net
There were reports of good Duckfly and cinnamon sedge hatches on some of the warmer days this week, which resulted in plenty of surface activity.
Anglers are asked to please return any trout which may look to have spawned this winter or look under weight for their length. These fish need to be protected and allowed time to recover.
Mr. Hugh Patrick O’Connor of Boherbue North Cork, who came of age today in years and christened his 18th Birthday off with his first ever 6 ½ lbs. Salmon caught on the fly
Vincent Appleby reports on a weekend of redemption, salmon style, on Lough Currane…
16/3/17 My Noble anglers are more interested in the Cheltenham races than the catching of a Wild Atlantic Salmon and why do I come to this conclusion because this evening after sending out text’s to all the Gillie’s, I got one reply and I quote, Back Ruby Walsh and No Salmon, well you can say without any fear of contradiction that text sums up today’s action in a nutcase and with five Boats out they ought to be ashamed of themselves. Wind N light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover, with the odd shower. Amount of rainfall 3.9 mm. maximum air temperature 13c. Minimum 8.3c.
17/3/17 This Saint Patrick’s Day was wild with rain all day and the old mobile was as silent as the lambs. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 1.6mm. Maximum air temperature 10.c. Minimum air temperature 6.7 c.
Mr. Hugh Patrick O’Connor of Boherbue North Cork, who came of age today in years and christened his 18th Birthday off with his first ever 6 ½ lbs. Salmon caught on the fly
18/3/17 A cracker of a day on Lough Currane, normally I leave the best to last but not today and for good reason the race for the first Salmon to be caught on the fly is over, its quite ironic in one sense the gentleman in question is Mr. Hugh Patrick O’Connor of Boherbue North Cork, who came of age today in years and christened his 18th Birthday off with his first ever 6 ½ lbs. Salmon caught on the fly off the point of Grassy Island and as his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com said welcome to the O’Shea school of fly fishing. On a personal Note its great to see a young angler take the limelight and again well done Hugh and may it be the first of many.
Mr. Noel Clancy caught himself a fine Salmon just under the 10 lbs
Now we head for the trolling department and all the trolling headlines go to Mr. Noel Clancy of Waterville and Kildare, while trolling down the North Shore he caught himself a fine Salmon just under the 10 lbs. on the troll and by all accounts had a great battle and the rest is history, Wind WNW and blustery with heavy down pours at times. Amount rainfall was 5.2 mm, the maximum air temperature 11.3c minimum 7c.
19/3/17 There were 5 boats manipulating the Lough Currane waters and sadly my noble anglers couldn’t stimulate the wild Atlantic Salmon, so on that note we will head downstream to the World Famous Butler Pool of www.watervillegolflinks.ie where there was some mighty stimulation in Mr. Liam Higgins fly rod and for good reason, while fishing the pool he caught a cracker of a 13 lbs. Salmon and as his Son-in-law Local Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy netted Liam’s fine Salmon he said to Dominic, as you know I’m a pro Golfer and now I can say I’m now on top of the Waterville Pro fly league for 2017. Wind SW light to fresh and overcast with misty rain. Amount of rainfall 2.3mm. Maximum air temperature 10.8 c. Minimum 1.7c
20/3/17 This Bank holiday Monday was a wild day and going by my Waterville Fishery secret service, there were just 3 boats out and to be fair they did well to stay out there because there was some violent gusts from the NW with showers and a mixture of hailstones and last but not least they didn’t procure any Salmon. Wind NW fresh to strong, amount of rainfall yesterday 1.2mm. Maximum air temperature 12.9c. Minimum 10.7 c.
Liam Ellis had a 9lb salmon on the troll
21/3/17 Waterville Angler Mr. Liam Ellis takes all the headlines in the Salmon department, while trolling caught a lightening fresh 9 lbs. salmon on the troll and for the other 3 boats they watched with envy as their day drew a blank. Now to the weather and it was cold out there today with a light NW and overcast with showers and as you can see by the picture there is snow on the mountain. Amount of rainfall yesterday 7.0 mm. Maximum air temperature 11.2c. Minimum 3.5c. Just for the record Local Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com took the photo and as you can see he’s as good with the iPad as he is with the fly.
22/3/17 Back to the cold weather, as the majority of anglers decided to rest on their laurels and warm their feet beside the fire in the Bar, so what can you say about these so called anglers, simple fine day fishermen! As I say that, one boat did venture out and drew a blank but at least he was out there fighting the elements. Wind NE fresh to strong with wintery showers. Amount of rainfall yesterday 4.9mm. Maximum air temperature 7.6c. Minimum 2.2c
That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts. Vincent Appleby
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. Conditions were fair for angling over the first half of the week but Friday and Saturday brought horrible conditions. Sunday, despite a poor forecast was a lovely day!
There was a limited trout effort but 1 boat reported 11 trout caught on wet flies with 4 of these of a decent size with the best being a 1½lb Gillaroo.
