First Spring Fish For Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Well done to Noel Fitzmaurice who has just landed the first spring fish of the year on Glenda Powell’s Blackwater Salmon Fishery beats on Monday 12 February. Noel’s salmon was a beautiful silver fish, fresh from the sea with long tailed sea lice.

This fish was caught on a Gold Bodied Willie Gunn Franc N Snaelda. After a moment of admiration and a photograph for posterity the salmon was released to complete its incredible journey back to its spawning grounds.

Today at the Ballyduff Bridge Fishery things didn’t go so smoothly. Connie Corcoran was out for the first time with the fly but the river started to rise; coming up over a foot and ended his day prematurely. Back to the waiting game again….

Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Due to the location of the beats, fishing can still usually be offered in low or high water.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery

Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Munster Coarse Anglers not put off by poor result at Annacotty

After a long absence of 10 years the Munster Coarse Anglers returned to Annacotty Pumphouse on the Lower Shannon. It doesn’t produce for them but it’s a great venue and they will be back to try again…

The Shannon didn't produce the goods this time but the Munster Anglers will be back
The Shannon didn’t produce the goods this time but the Munster Anglers will be back

On Sunday we fished our penultimate Winter League match on the stands at Annacotty Pumphouse after an absence 10 years (A big thank you to our friends at Limerick & District Anglers who facilitated us).
To put it mildly it did not fish, only 5 of our anglers caught out of a field 12 .

1st Ian Kelsey 4 fish – 12oz
2nd Liam Bedford  2 fish – 11.5oz
3rd kamil smiechowski  2 fish – 5oz

Steve Grogan & Paul Mcaul were the other 2 anglers to trouble the scales

The fishing was poor, but Munster Coarse Anglers still have faith in the venue

It was a disappointing result, however we will be back when the conditions are a bit more favourable.

New format and venues for next year’s winter league

Due to the poor attendance of the event we are trying a different idea for next year as you may have seen we are trying to get a river event for four dates in January and February. We have good interest with several other clubs showing interest too. We are looking at teams of four if possible. Any lads or lassies interested please let us know on our facebook page and register teams to give us an idea of numbers. We are looking at the Shannon, Barrow and the Suck so far as other rivers in the midlands dont seem to have the pegs available. Local clubs will help host the events with hopefully their own teams to boost numbers.

Angling Notes: First salmon of 2017 caught at Careysville Fishery, Irish Times

Careysville Fishery on the Munster Blackwater river welcomed regular Navan angler Paul O’Malley and his party of three friends on opening day (February 1st). The group fish the first week of the new season each year. After a large flood reaching 7ft on the gauge five days earlier, the river dropped down to 3ft 7in on the first day of the season…

Michael Viney: how trout disappeared from my favourite river

My favourite stretch of Mayo river flows between ivied oaks in a hollow below the bog and onwards under Louisburgh’s bridge to the sea. The Bunowen is perfect for sea trout – quite a short river, a bit acid, low in nutrients, running up to stony shallows in the moor. In the hollow, it glides over eight mossy boulder weirs, built more than a century ago…

Delphi salmon anglers off the blocks

salmon
Bob Hadden with the Delphi's first salmon of the year

David McEvoy reports from Delphi where they’ve just had their first salmon of the new season…

Well we’re up and running here at Delphi since the 1st of February and Bob Hadden who was on a short visit from the US landed the 1st of the season on Friday morning.

It was indeed well deserved as Bob is now in his 20th year fishing in Delphi. He had fished a couple of days earlier last week with no success, but on Friday he was joined by Steve Jones who also rose a fish. Bob landed his, a beautiful 8lbs3ozs sea liced fish in the Deadmans on a cold, bright, sunny February day. The river was at 28, with water temperatures just over 6 degrees C. The fish took a Cascade Conehaed fished on a floating line. The lower water, combined with low temperatures probably makes it easier to target fish this time of year as they tend to move more slowly through the river.

salmon
Bob Hadden with the Delphi’s first salmon of the year

Needless to say, we were all delighted to see the first fish landed and Bob was over the moon. It is probably the second fish landed in the country this year and more than likely the first on the fly. I may be incorrect about the above but it’s great to have a fish landed.

We have had relatively light fishing pressure since the 1stwhen we had our Blast and Cast group from Bavaria. Their Cast did not live up to the great heights of two years ago but a good time was had by all. We have a serious group of Irish anglers this weekend led by Angus Sutherland, who will leave no stone unturned in Pursuit of Silver. The weather is forecast cold and dry but the water should hold up for another few days and we do have availability from Tuesday on, so if any of you feel like brushing off the cobwebs, feel free to give us a shout because as one of our great angler’s always said; “You’d Never Know The Minute”.

I should also note that we have lost two great friends and customers of Delphi in the last month. David Hewetson-Brown who always came in week 24 with Richard Maye and their wives Susan and Mary. He was a great character and always on good form. He will be sadly missed by all. John Bartleet who came with his wife Felicity also passed on and again he will be missed by all. May they both Rest in Peace.

Salmon drought over on Drowes, water drought continues

salmon
Bangor angler William Rainey with the first salmon of the year from the Drowes

Shane Gallagher reports on the capture of the Drowes’s first salmon of 2017,  the water levels and angling conditions…

The first salmon from the river Drowes of 2017 was caught yesterday morning from the Mill Pool by Bangor angler William Rainey. The 8lbs sea liced fish was taken on William’s first day fishing this season on worm.

salmon
Bangor angler William Rainey with the first salmon of the year from the Drowes

This is the latest a first salmon of the season has been taken from the river and also the lowest water level in which a first salmon has been caught at just 0.488 metres on the gauge, summer levels.
Fishing prospects looked poor this morning with very low water levels and a biting north east wind. However William and his fishing friend Karl saw a number of fresh running fish which may signal an improvement in what has been a worryingly slow start to the salmon season throughout the country.

Hugh Gillespie with William
Hugh Gillespie, IFI with William Rainey and the Drowes’s first salmon of the season

As a measure to encourage the catch and release of more spring fish, the fishery will offer a free days fishing to all anglers who catch and release a fresh wild salmon and verify it with photo or video from now until 1st May.

So anglers who release a fish will fish for free on their next visit to the fishery. Season ticket holders will receive a voucher equivalent to the cost of a days fishing per verified C&R fish up to May 1st.

Multi sea winter fish are vital to all fisheries even to systems which comfortably meet their conservation limits and where a “harvestable surplus” exists such as the Drowes. Multi sea winter fish are predominately female and have more and larger eggs and thus greater spawning potential and egg viability.

The state is the largest owner of fisheries in Ireland, including some of the most prolific spring rivers. It would be welcome to see the state implement some conservation incentives for multi sea winter fish in the waters under its control.

Lost & Found

A box of flying cs has been lost around Lennox’s Bridge. If anyone comes across it could they leave it in the tackle shop at Lareen to be reunited with its owner.

Weather

Cold, windy and dry, staying mainly dry until midweek.
Water level 0.488 metres
Water Temperature 6 Celsius

A word of thanks to all the anglers who have fished since the start of the season. Lets hope 2017 is a good year for anglers and fish alike

Lough Melvin

Lindsey Clarke reports

Lough Melvin opened on the 1st of February for salmon angling. A fair number of boats ventured out on the 1st day but no salmon were reported with a 3½ lb brown trout being the best fish reported. Melvin does not open for brown trout fishing until the 15th February and all brown trout caught by accident must be released. The following few days saw poor conditions which were not favourable angling conditions and the lough was quiet. We await news of the 1st Melvin salmon of 2017.
