Poachers in Kilkenny 'launder' salmon and burn down house – Kilkenny People

Despicable and extremely dangerous salmon poachers burned a family out of their home (which was under construction).
The shocking revelation came to light as evidence emerged that illegally caught salmon are being moved from Kilkenny to other parts of the country where they can be tagged and then passed on as being legal.
And poachers are flouting the law – Openly selling illegally caught salmon at the roadside….

Kerry council declares war on ‘rampant’ Japanese knotweed – Irish Examiner

The invasive species is now out of control in the southwest, and is rampant along major river banks, roads and town centre sites across the region.

A knotweed survey as a condition of planning permission, which would be in line with Britain, is needed, it has been claimed.

Specialised units are being trained to deal with it in public areas in Kerry and their remit should extend to private property, the monthly meeting of the county council was told….

Irish Angling Update – 22nd September 2016

Nature at it's best from Sheelin

As the farming community congregate on Tullamore for their annual Ploughing Championship and the All Irelands pit one county against another, we feel the urgency to catch that ‘big’ one before the end of the season.  The River Suir breathed a sigh of relief this week with a super salmon and sea anglers in Clare rubbed their eyes as a monster Six Gill rocked the boat for Luke Aston…..

It was great to see some big fish being caught before the season’s finale comes. Many of the rivers didn’t perform as good as previous years. The Moy has a tally of 5,619 so far this year, which is down on last year’s figure.  This week did see 130 salmon reported though, with visiting German tourists taking the cream of the crop.  Despite the difficult conditions the East Mayo water provided some reasonable fly fishing during the week.  Erriff fished well too with fresh fish still entering the system. The upper garden pool was the spot where UK angler Peter Unsworth caught a 4.6lb fresh grilse on a stoat’s tail. –   It was sea trout that provided the action at Eske Fishery and down at  Currane, where they ranged from Junior Class up to a fine 4lber.  The Laune remained silent during the week and so did the Owenea Fishery.  The Lee saw 13 salmon landed for the week; the best was 9lbs caught on a fly.  The Bandon welcomed a few fresh fish with the high tide and hope to see big fresh multi sea winter fish before the season ends – often referred to as ‘Blackberry fish’ by the locals.

Fort William on the Munster Blackwater was delighted to see a few heavy weights during the week. Tim Keane from Dublin caught and released a fine salmon which measured 39.5″ long and was estimated at 23lbs.  They also had some ranging from 12lbs to 16lbs.  Blackwater Salmon Fishery reports a busy September so far with some fine fish in their spawning colours.   Steady water levels on the Drowes saw an improvement on last week and the river fished well with some 20 salmon caught up to 12lbs. The star of the week came in at the River Suir, Co Tipperary. This 30lb+ cock salmon was about a week in off the tide and one of about 20 multi sea winter autumn fish caught since the last flood on the Suir cleared.  Angler Owen Jackman caught the salmon on a home tied fly, Golden Flamethrower.  This cracking fish is our ‘Catch of the Week’ and hopefully we will meet up with him another day.

Martin McGorian of Dodder Anglers won the Interprovincial that was fished on Lough Melvin recently and will now represent Ireland in the Four Nations Home International in Scotland in 2017. We wish him well. Lough Sheelin proved that where anglers put in effort, success wasn’t too far away.  As the trout become restless in their need to migrate to spawn anglers have to keep their wits about them. 47 trout were caught this week, the heaviest  being 6lbs + by Gary McKiernan.  A stunning coloured brownie was the catch for HF McCloy on Lough Mask who had a double hook up with both fish over 14 inches.  Wets, drys and dabs drew in some Corrib trout averaging 2 to 3lbs.  While at the Woodquay Last Cast Competition, first and second place saw two trout at 4.35lbs and 4.20Lbs respectively.  Lough Melvin fished well for trout, mainly Sonaghan, over the deep water drifts but salmon anglers didn’t fare as well.  A newly stocked Carrigavantry in Co. Waterford reminds us of the Dick Doyle competition on Sunday 25th of Sept.  The PRO tells us that the Autumn weather usually brings on a feeding frenzy of brown trout looking to take advantage of any terrestrials that get blown on the water.

The junior anglers were in action at Inniscarra, where the U15, U20 and U25 qualifiers for the 2017 FIPS-ed World Youth Angling Championships took place. Way up the country the Belturbet Autumn Festival was won by Wayne Fuller with 54.420kg.  A total weight of 850kg was recorded on the day.  Eighty one anglers took part on a miserable day in the Annual Arva King of Clubs Festival where Kevin Rowles was the king with 63.280kg.

Friendships were formed as the Killinarden anglers had a 24 hour friendly at Lough Ree, Lanesborough. Saturday saw perfect weather and catches of bream, hybrids, tench, perch, roach and rudd.  A great day and well worth the journey.

The Midlands was the venue for some great pike fishing this week. Jimmy Murray of Queens, New York hit some crackers on the fly while out with guide Mick Flanagan.  On Lough Corrib, Aidan Traynor had a right battle on his hands when a cracking 23lbs 7ozs pike tested his skills against him in a great battle.  He finally gave up, had his picture taken quickly and swam away to fight another day.  But not before breaking Aidan’s landing net!

Screaming Reels made headlines again when it won the Rosslare Small Boats Festival for the eighth year. Fantastic prizes were on offer worth in the region of €20,000, including fishing equipment, cash prizes and engraved trophies.  A tight competition with gale force winds delaying the start of the competition.  36 different fish species were recorded in total throughout the festival.

Kayaker Gary Robinson braved the seas down in Kerry but his only bounty was a few wrasse and some small Pollack. Kinsale charters had bigger prey in their sights and the south coast provided them with good size porbeagles.  A much bigger chunky monster emerged for Carrigaholt Skipper Luke Aston.  This Six Gill shark estimated to be about 1,100lbs is one of many he has caught over the years. Fellow skipper Seán Maguire reports good shoals of big mackerel in the area too.

1,100lb monster ...
1,100lb monster …for Luke Aston

On Friday southerly winds will be fresh or strong generally, and will reach gale force at times in exposed parts of the southwest and west. Highest temperatures 15 to 17 degrees Celsius.  Saturday should be mild and windy with outbreaks of rain, locally heavy, clearing to showers in the west later. The outlook for next week is for a continuation of a mobile Atlantic airflow bringing mixed conditions across Ireland. There will be sunny spells and good drying intervals but spells of rain and passing showers at times also. Temperatures around average and overall quite a windy period with gales at times at sea and rough seas.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Irish boat ‘Screaming Reels’ from Cork wins Rosslare Small Boats Festival for eight time

The Irish boat ‘Screaming Reels’ has won the Rosslare Small Boats Festival for a record eight year in what was a very tight competition.  This is the sixth year in a row that the crew from Rosie’s Sea Angling Club from Midleton in Cork, who first started fishing the competition in 2008, has won. They beat 43 other boats from Britain and Ireland catching 30 different species of fish for 28.03 kilos. This prestigious competition generates in the region of €300,000 for the local economy, bringing jobs and employment to Wexford.

Josie Mahon (Inland Fisheries Ireland), Neville Murphy, Martyn Rayner from the ‘Screaming Reels’ Boat, with John Belger (UK Organiser of the Rosslare Small Boats Festival) and Seirt Shultz from ‘Screaming Reels’

Sponsored by Inland Fisheries Ireland, Garmin, DAIWA, Wexford County Council, Fáilte Ireland, Sea Angler magazine and IPB Insurance, the 31st festival attracted more than 138 anglers from Wales, Scotland, Isle of Wight, Manchester, Liverpool and Portsmouth as well as domestic anglers from Ireland. The high standard of competition, combined with a quality angling product, continues to attract the best boat anglers in Great Britain and Ireland in what is now regarded as the finest small boat fishing competition in Europe. This was evident again this year with 12 new boats attending the Festival, with many coming from Wales.

Weather conditions on the day were challenging with gale force winds delaying the start of the competition. The winds eased during the week allowing boats to be launched from Kilmore Quay every day enabling them to target all species. The competition was fierce and the boats recorded up to 21 species on the first day (a new record) with the boat ‘Even Less’ in the lead for the first two days. This continued throughout the week with many boats neck and neck over a number of days.

One third of the boats caught 22 different types of fish species with 36 different fish species recorded in total throughout the festival. It was ‘Screaming Reels’ from Midleton, Cork however who got to the finish line first with 30 species of fish after four days fishing. The heaviest fish was a bull huss of 6.25kgs caught by Ralph Barkley on the boat ‘Seeker’.

The winning boat ‘Screaming Reels’ consisted of crew Martyn Rayner (skipper) Seirt Shults and Neville Murphy who have continued to raise the bar of the Rosslare Small Boats Fishing Competition.  Second place went to the boat ‘Even Less’ (Wesley Lewis, Steve Mills and Steve Arnold) from Gosport Angling Club in Portsmouth with 28 species for 16.10 kilos.  In third place was ‘Joe 90’ (John Meaning, Dave Weatherby and Graham Cuff) from the Isle of Wight with 26 species for 21.16 kilos.

Inland Fisheries Ireland was present at the event with a marine fish tank for the purpose of displaying fish species that were caught during the competition. Staff from Inland Fisheries Ireland were on hand to educate the public about the fish species on offer from Kilmore Quay. The educational benefits of the marine tank and practising catch and release for marine species are hugely beneficial in terms of conservation and creating public awareness of Ireland’s marine resource. The public were able to view marine fish such as ballan wrasse, smoothound, gurnard and dabs which were kept in the fish tank and released back into their marine habitat alive. An overwhelming effort was made by anglers to release marine species back alive to the ocean, which was hugely supported by Kilmore Quay harbour master and staff at Wexford County Council.

The prize giving ceremony took place at ‘Redmond’s The Bay, where there were fantastic prizes worth in the region of €20,000 on offer including fishing equipment, cash prizes and engraved trophies. A presentation was made to the RNLI in Kilmore Quay who were represented by Johnny Moore who anglers thanked for their generosity.

John Belger, UK organiser of the competition said: ‘I would like to congratulate all competitors on their success at the 31st Rosslare Small Boats festival. I would also like to thank our sponsors Garmin, DAIWA, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Wexford County Council, Fáilte Ireland, Sea Angler magazine and IPB Insurance for their generosity and look forward to seeing you all next year’.

Big numbers of juniors and sea trout for Currane anglers

Mr. Tom Smith
Mr. Tom Smith

Staying at the Bungalow and the fly department, Mr. David Burn and his good friend David from France, caught 2 Trout on the drift all while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. In the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com UK fly anglers, Mr. Nigel Stevens and his Brother, caught 7 Juniors. Mr. Noel Ross and Mr. Tom Smith from Dublin and fishing in the hired out Boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com caught 11 Sea Trout, ranging from Junior Class up to 2 lbs. Wind ENE light with the odd light shower.

15/9/16 In the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com UK fly anglers, Mr. Nigel Stevens and his Brother topped yesterday’s catch with 22 Juniors. Now we finish today’s action again in the fly department, Mr. Stefan Kuth and his good friend Werner, while fishing with their Gillie, caught 7 Juniors on the Drift. Wind West light with bright sunshine all day.

Mr. Tom Smith
Mr. Tom Smith

16/9/16 We start on the South Side of the Lake, Mr. Tom Smith and Mr, Noel Ross, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly ofwww.lakelandshouse.com  caught a fine 6 lbs. Salmon on the troll and not satisfied with that, they put their trolling rods to one side and manipulated their Flies across the water, by the end of their day they had caught 6 Sea Trout ranging from Juniors up to 2 lbs. All in all you can say they had a cracker of a day, staying with the fly, UK angler Mr. Nigel Henshaw, while fishing with his Gillie, caught 1 Salmon / Grilse and finished their day off with 6 Trout all caught on the fly. A guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley, caught 2 Juniors on the drift. A Guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Ternce Wharton, also caught a few nice Juniors on the drift and staying with Terence in the past few days has caught one Salmon on the troll, while fishing with his guest. Now to the hired out boat department ofwww.oshealoughcurrane.com Mr. Mike O’Harrlain caught a fine 4 lbs Sea Trout on the drift and in the words of one Gillie and I quote the last few days, the fishing hasn’t  been bad. Wind North Light with reasonable cloud cover.

17/9/16 In the last few days, Mr. Jim Marriot and fishing party and fishing with their Gillie’s Mr. Neil O’Shea and of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Between the two Boats they caught 20 Sea Trout up to 2 lbs. All were C&R. Now for today’s action, we start at the bungalow and the hired out boat department of  www.oshealoughcurrane.com Mr. Brian O’Connell and Richie White, caught 5 Sea Trout and Mr. Richie White finished their day off with a fine Salmon. Staying in Neil’s hired out boat department Mr. Mike O’Hanranan caught 4 Sea Trout on the Drift and last but not least, an angler fishing out of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 3 Trout up to 2 lbs. and just for the record all the Bungalow catches were C&R. Now we head for the South Side and a Mixture of the hired out boat department and the Gillie at the  helm. We Start in the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Bob and Roman from Luxemburg, they caught 14  Trout on the drift. The Steven Brothers from the UK caught 11 Sea Trout from Junior Class up to 2 lbs. also in good form in Frank’s hired out boat department was Mr. DJ Riordan from Killarney, who caught 6 Juniors, another of Franks hired out boats had 9 Sea Trout to his rod and last but not least Mr. Michael  Debrun fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly ofwww.lakelandshouse.com caught 3 Juniors. Wind W light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover.

18/9/16 Lough Currane was on the quiet side as fly anglers changed their flies and their fly lines from floating to intermediate with no immediate effect and by the end of the day you can say without any fear of contradiction, with no effect at all and as I say that I have just received a Text from local Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea ofwww.oshealoughcurrane.com and I quote, Bob and Roman from Luxemburg caught 3 Trout on the fly with me. So on that note we go to the backdate department of the hired out boat department of www.Lakelandshouse.com yesterday, Mr. Steven Nation and Mr. P Murphy, caught 8 Juniors on the drift. Now for a bit of stand up comedy, today I received a photo of an Angler trying out new supposed life saving gear and going by the photo my advice is stay in the Fishing shed Lads. Wind North light with reasonable cloud cover and the odd shower.

19/9/16 UK fly angler, Mr. Nigel Henshaw, while fishing with his Gillie, caught 1 Junior and finished their day with a  fine 2 lbs. Brown Trout. For the rest of the angling community, they failed miserably in their duties in the procuring of a wild game fish, or were they trying to camouflage their misgivings for the lack of fish, so they could exaggerate their catches in the back bar. Wind NW light with good cloud cover.

20/9/16 There was only one Star angler today on Lough Currane and that was 15 year old Marc Whelan of Dublin, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com,  caught his first ever Sea Trout / junior on the fly and it wasn’t long before he followed it up with a another fine Junior, so congratulations to Marc and may it be the first of many. Now we head across to the South Side and the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Niall O’Hearcain and his good friend, caught 6 Juniors on the drift. Now for the rest of the angling news, well there isn’t any for the simple reason the rest of the participating anglers failed miserably in their duties in all departments, so on that note we go to quote of the day and that goes to local Gillie Mr. Terence Wharton Jnr, I ain’t out in that pond, I’m fishing for a Lobster, Cheers!! Wind SW light with good cloud cover with the odd light shower this afternoon.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

A few salmon on the Bandon, good water

Jason Nash ith a grilse he released over the weekend
Jason Nash ith a grilse he released over the weekend

Jason Nash from the Bandon Angling Association reports on the catches and conditions on the River Bandon…

20 September: Water levels over the past week have remained very steady due to periods of rain and overcast conditions. A nice few fish were caught and released on fly and spinner but most had been in the system a while. The high tides saw a small upturn in the amount of fresh fish running but they still arrived in small numbers.

Jason Nash ith a grilse he released over the weekend
Jason Nash ith a grilse he released over the weekend

Dredging of the Bandon Bridge area commenced yesterday as gravel is being removed 15m above the bridge and 25m below. Further to this, Wills Bros. have commenced trial excavations upstream of O’Driscoll’s footbridge. Anglers are reminded that these works will result in discolouration of the river downstream.

Finally, members are requested to securely close gates and be mindful of landowners property, such as fencing, along the river. If you open a gate, please close it correctly. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Editors note: eileen Carroll in the Macroom office tells us that the Bandon was always known for its big fresh multi sea winter fish in late August and September which were always referred to as Blackberry fish. Hopefully a few will turn up before the season’s end…

Go Fishing…

For the new year, Bandon Angling Association have set up a new website which you can view here. A new guiding service has been launched in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon.
