Some nice trout fishing reported from Lough Owel and a few fish including a trout of 6 lb. from nearby Lough Ennell in Mullingar.

The last two weeks on Owel saw a decline in numbers of anglers fishing.

Dodder Angling Club held a competition with thirty anglers returning twenty fish:-

  • 1st Karl O’Toole had three fish 4 lb. 14 ozs
  • 2nd Casey O’Donnell had two fish 4 lb.
  • 3rd Sean Goulding had three fish 3 lb. 12 oz.

Other catches included:
Billy Darby, Mullingar had six fish over three days best 2.25 lb.
Johnny Plunkett, Mullingar had two fish best 1.25 lb.
Gerry O’Reilly, Dublin had two fish 1 x 2 lb. and 1 x 1.25 lbs.
Michael McCormack, Mullingar had three fish 1 x 1.75 lb.
Christy Martin from Tullamore had four fish averaging 1.5 lb.
Michael Traynor from Dublin had three fish x 1.5 lb.

On Sunday 4th September 2011 the Clonhugh Cup was fished on Owel.  Twenty eight anglers took part and caught twenty fish.

  • 1st Joe Davis with one fish 2 lb.
    2nd Eugene Fagan – one fish 2 lb.

More catches:
Michael McCormack 1 x 1.75 lb.
Christy Martin 1 x 1.25 lb.
Johnny O’Malley had five fish heaviest 3 lb.

Lough Ennell

Fishing is poor at the moment with weather conditions turning very showery and cold.

Philip Smith had four fish over five days fishing heaviest 3 lb.
Michael Devaney had one fish for four days weighing 6 lbs.
Johnny O’Malley had one fish 1.5 lbs.
