John Devanney reports from the IFI office in Portrunny Co. Roscommon reports on coarse fishing on the River Suck and on the River Shannon in Co. Roscommon.
River Suck:
Levels on the River Suck have risen over the weekend, with bank fishing impossible in most places below Athleague. Some good fishing was reported in Stonehams and Hollygrove lakes over the weekend.
River Shannon:
Athlone has large stocks of Roach present in the town stretch. The Meadows and downstream of the weir wall is unfishable at present, due to high water.
Lanesborough has produced some large tench up to 7 lb., and hybrids up to 5 lb. Like Athlone, there are large shoals of Roach in the area at present. The weeds are now cut in Lanesborough, and it is possible to fish all of the bank.
In an email, Paul Waghorn from ” Lanesborough Angling ” was on a quick visit to Lanesborough sent me an email on his week long trip
“A very satisfying 72 hours with nearly 100 Bream coming out all along the stretch. My 7 lb 11 oz specimen, my best in the town section for 13 years, was bettered by Bobby McHughs 7 lb. 15 oz fish and there was one other 7 lb. plus fish.
- Paul Waghorn with a bream of 7 lb. 11 oz from the hot water stretch at Lanesborough
The week started with local IFI fisheries officer, Arnie Donnelly clearing a huge amount of weed that had made angling conditions almost impossible in certain swims. Several Rudd and Perch in excess of a pound were caught before the Bream appeared when the river rose. A few Tench were caught but very few Hybrids and Roach of any size. Going home Tuesday the 21st of August”
