The last of the Garda Team training matches was held on Lough Muckno on Wednesday last 23rd August. The lake is extremely high at the moment and the session was held at South Lodge where there were good concentrations of fish. 12 anglers fished a mixture of pole and feeder techniques in excellent conditions with only a light onshore breeze. Feeder was generally fished at 35m with caster and maggot hook-baits. Catches consisted mainly of roach, hybrids and skimmers and the top weight of 40lbs 6ozs was taken by Dick Caplice, next best was Niall McKitterick with 36lbs 10ozs and Eamonn Bracken followed with 28lbs 12ozs. All other anglers weighed in between 26lbs and 11lbs and only two bream were taken during the session.
UK anglers, Jason Arnold, Richard Gudgeon, Matthew Eaton and Gavin Frusher all visited Co Monaghan during the last week. On Tuesday 28th August, Matthew Eaton revisited the Brothers in Carrickmacross to see if he could hook up with some tench but Jason, Richard and Gavin returned to Muckno following a successful day on Monday. Fishing was excellent on Monday with Gavin netting the best bag of the day, pulling together a nice net of roach, skimmers and hybrids weighing 39lbs. Gavin was also in the process of putting another nice net of fish together when I spoke with him today Tuesday 28th August. Richard Gudgeon had 24lbs on Monday fishing with maggot, worm and caster and was kept busy again this morning. Richards catch consisted of some nice roach, skimmers and some hybrids. Jason Arnold also had a nice net on Monday weighing 33lbs 14ozs. Jason had a couple of small bream the best of which weighed 2.5lbs. He was fishing feeder at 40-50m and again was catching well on Tuesday morning. Matthew who was on the Brothers had a nice mixed net of fish 23lbs on Muckno on the Monday.
