The 5th leg of the Grauvell West Coast Shore League took place on Sunday on Keel beach in Achill, hosted by Corrane  SAC. A beautiful clean surf greeted competitors when they arrived, with no weed in sight. Weather was perfect for the first 3 hours, with warm sunshine tempered by an onshore breeze, but this was followed by torrential rain for the last hour. Fishing was quite good, with good numbers of turbot and the off flounder coming in throughout the competition.

The overall winner was Corrane angler Fiachra McKenna, with 14 fish for 203 points. The winner of Zone A was Stephen O’Sullivan, with 7 fish for 166 points, followed by Kevin Crowley with 7 fish for 156 points, and Andrew McDermott with 11 fish for 129 points (all Galway Bay SAC members).

Zone B was won by Newport SAC’s Shane Gilvarry, with 12 fish for 144 points. Second place went to Joe Bernie Jr., (Lisdoonvarna Fanore SAC) with 9 fish for 132 points, and third was Ed Kilroy (Newport SAC) with 10 fish for 131 points.

The best fish of the day was taken by Peter Atkins (GBSAC) on his last cast – a fine specimen flounder of 44cm which weighed 2lbs 14oz.

The result leaves Stephen O’Sullivan in first place in the league on 478 points, with Ed Kilroy nipping at his heels, just 2 points in arrears. Fiachra McKenna is in third, closely followed by Peter Atkins and Declan Gallagher. With just 3 legs left in the league, and competitors able to drop their 2 worst scores, it’s all to play for.

The next leg will be held in Mullaghmore on the 2nd of September.
