Tom Collins of “Jorree Jade” charters reports from Cork today that 14 year old Ben Healy landed a Mako shark.  He tells us:

We have some great news for the angling world. Today we landed a mako shark while fishing for blue shark off the coast of Union Hall on the “Jorree Jade”. We tagged and released the shark which measured almost 2 meters and 1 meter in girth.

I know some people mistake makos for porbeagles but this shark was metallic blue in colour and had only one set of cadual fins as opposed to the 2 sets belonging to the porbeagle. Water temp was 18 degrees which also supports makos.

When we got the run I went to set the hook and dropped the fish so I quickly reeled in the line to see if the bait was still there. About 30 feet from the boat the mako came like a bullet across the top of the water and took the mackeral bait.

Ben Healy, age 14 from Airport Road, Cork City was the captor of this Mako.
