Mark Carolan reports that as the national Fisheries Awareness Week draws to a close, Drogheda’s angling community can hold it’s head up high and be very proud of itself.
With a week long back to back schedule, the events never lost interest, value or enthusiasm, qualities which were clearly evident on Saturday the 18th of May when the “Drogheda Coarse Anglers Club” took to the lush green banks of the Boyne canal to host their final event of the program. An enthusiastic gathering of thirty eager and budding young anglers and their family’s made there way to the marquee, where Mark Carolan and Shane O’Reilly kick started the show by welcoming everybody. After giving a short talk on safety and the environment, they each took a group of youngsters and went through various aspects of coarse angling which included plumbing the depth, setting up a rod, mixing groundbait and so on.
So eager where these groups to learn, that not even the constant rain could drive away anyone.
During the session the Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, Fergus O Dowd came along and showed a very keen interest in all that was going on and also to lend his support for the event.
At this point it was time for some light refreshments, kindly sponsored by Brendan O’Brian inc and also time for the free draw which saw some wonderful prizes given including whips, reels, starter kits, floats and groundbait. With many thanks to Peter Cunningham of the Boyne Angling Center, Inland Fisheries Ireland and also Mark and Terrence Carolan who sponsored the prizes.
At the end of the day, phone numbers and membership forms were exchanged and new friendships formed, a true sign of a well worth while, well run and valued event.
Thanks a million from everyone in the Drogheda Coarse Anglers Club to all who made the event possible, the clubs, the staff of Inland Fisheries Ireland, local businesses, stakeholders and sponsors.
The club continues to actively recruit new members so if you are interested in joining this progressive club why not drop Secretary Mark Carolan an email to [email protected] or give him a call on 087 2801178
