On Friday 17th May 2013, Drogheda and District Angling Club supported and sponsored by Inland Fisheries Ireland held a “Junior Fishing Evening”, on their waters at Barnattin Reservoir, Drogheda, Co Louth as part of Fisheries Awareness Week. This open evening was available for anyone to attend and around 35 children accompanied by 50 adults packed the banks all around the reservoir. The event ran from 6.30pm till 9.30pm and fish were caught all around the reservoir from the start with many children having their first experience of fishing and catching fish.
Drogheda and District Anglers Club have been serving the angling community in Drogheda and the surrounding area for 75 years and have always encouraged young people to take up the sport of angling. Youth competitions have always played a big part in the clubs activities and are a big part of the clubs calendar of events each season. This year as part of Fisheries Awareness Week the club, sponsored and supported by local businesses, stakeholders and Inland Fisheries Ireland organised an open junior fishing evening on Barnattin reservoir.
Club members were on hand to show the children how to fish and help them with setting up fishing tackle. This fun packed evening was not one to be missed and the clubs years of experience in organising and running such events certainly showed. There were prizes for every single child who fished with prizes being sponsored by Peter Cunningham at the Boyne Angling Centre, the Club and Inland Fisheries Ireland. Other sponsors also contributed prizes to this event. Inland Fisheries Ireland would like to thank and congratulate all of the children and parents that participated in the event, the Drogheda and District Anglers Club for hosting the event on their waters at Barnattin and all of the club members who helped out with the event. Local sponsors who sponsored a number of larger fish for the day including Dermot Seberry from www.foodeducators.ie the Pet Centre, Mary’s Market Cafe and Boyne Angling Centre in the Boyne Shopping Centre in Drogheda are also due a lot of thanks for their help. Nolan’s Bar on the Chord Road, Drogheda also sponsored these larger fish. The main stocking was sponsored by Inland Fisheries Ireland with a contribution from Drogheda and District Angling Club.
