Lindsey Clarke reports that there was some rainfall on the Drowes last week but this had little effect on water levels. At the start of the week the river was reading 0.46 metres and by the end of Sunday the gauge had fell slightly to 0.45 metres. This however had little effect on the salmon as grilse continued to run in good numbers as catches illustrated. This was a good week on the Drowes with some 100 salmon recorded for the week. Space precludes mentioning all catches but given here are some of the records from the catch register. A party of 7 Swiss rods staying for the week recorded between them 36 grilse weighing from 2 to 5lb caught on flies and worm from the Lareen section of the river and between the Four Master’s Bridge and Lennox’s Bridge. Visiting Welsh rod Paul Rippingale recorded 4 grilse caught from Monday to Wednesday weighing 3, 4, 4 & 5lb caught on prawn from the Sea Pools, the Island Pool & the Eel Weir. David Thompson logged 3 grilse caught over Wednesday & Thursday weighing from 4 to 5lb caught on prawn & worm from the Island & Otter pools. On Friday, Michael Kruse reported 2 grilse weighing 5lb apiece caught on prawn from the Sea Pools. On Sunday, John Kelly accounted for 2 grilse weighing 3 & 4lb caught on worm from the Eel Weir.
Prospects look very good for the coming week.
