Rob Love from Carton House Fishery reports:
The Sheet of water has only seen light fishing over the last number of weeks. Fishing has been a little bit patchy – although with cold weather featuring that is hardly surprising. Having said that I was out with my good friend Malcolm McLagan where the two of us had a very productive couple of hours even though conditions would have suggested otherwise.
Goldheads fished slowly were working well in particular.
A standard 5wt rod is just the ticket and floating lines are perfectly adequate as the water is not very deep.
Parking is at the Sheet of Water and as with fishing on the Rye Lake permits must be purchased at the hotel reception prior to fishing.
Fishing / watercraft lessons can also be arranged on this stretch of water. Included in the price for a lesson is the hire of a rod, reel, line and flies for anyone new to the sport.
Lessons are with a Carton House Guide and cost €50.
A 6 hour permit continues to be half price at €25. Anglers should note that this means they can fish for both Pike on the Rye Lake and Trout on the Sheet of Water (Fly only) in this timeframe – so if one is not working the other might. This offer is open until the start of the season on March 1st.
