Michael Flanagan reports that Lough Lene provided excellent sport all last week for local and visiting anglers, with plenty of hard fighting rainbows taking fly and lures…

Last Sunday Lough Lene Anglers hosted the Peadar Caffrey Cup. This fly only competition was penciled in for last April but was cancelled due to bad weather conditions. Some lovely fish were produced at the 6pm finish at Fagan’s Point, and Kildare Angler John O, Neill was Top Rod with a fish of 1.66kg.Barney Mullholland of Dundalk was 2nd, with 1.60kg, and Longford Angler John Brennan 3rd also with 1.60kg.As both Barney and John had fish of he same weight, the measurements rule came into place, and Barney Mulhollands fish measured 21inches, just piping John Brennan’s fish of 20 inches. Junior winner was Pierce Corroon of Mullingar.

The retired Guinness Brewery lads Val Wynne, and Owen McEnteggart were back in Mullingar last week. They had a lovely few days staying at the Annesbrook House Hotel, and were really impressed with the popular Hotel. The fishing was also top notch, as they boated some lovely fish on the fly. The best fish of the few days fishing fell to Owen, and was caught on Dry Sedge. Plans are on line for another trip to Lene before the season ends on September 30th.
