Rob Love reports on trout in The Rye Water
Season 1st March – 30th September
The long wait is almost over. This beautiful little river which holds an excellent head of wild trout is open to fishing from Friday 1st March. It is a river which given its amazing water clarity in all but a flood and wary trout will test even the best of fly fishermen.
In early season weighted nymphs work well, especially given the low temperatures forecast over the coming week.
Floating lines of 3, 4 or 5 weight are ideal – anything heavier can tend to spook the beautifully marked resident brownies. Fishing is strictly by fly only and all fish caught must be returned.
Permits should be purchased at the hotel main reception (where maps are available) prior to fishing. Parking is at the hotel car park or by the boathouse on the Rye Lake.
Trout fishing on the Rye Lake is also open from Friday 1st March. There is a good head of trout to over 5lb on this stretch of water. As with fishing on the Rye Water it is also strictly by fly only.
