Rob Love reports from Carton House: Fishing on Carton House estate has been superb over the last week.  The Rye Lake, the Rye Water and the Sheet of Water have all fished their socks off in the last few days.

The Rye Water has been running low and clear over the last week.  This however proved to be no obstacle to a guest of the hotel, Adrian Kelly, who rated his fishing on Monday afternoon as his best afternoons fishing in over 40 years.
Adrian had 3 large trout on Nymphs – the best by his reckoning over 4lb, another around 4lb and a lovely 3lb fish.  He also caught and released several fish of around the 1 – 2lb mark.

Also worth special mention is one of the best young fishermen I have ever encountered.  For such a young angler Darren Redmond’s way with a fly was an eye opener for me.  Visiting from England he caught and released several cracking fish from the river – the best around 2.5lb.

The Sheet of Water

Youth also took centre stage on the Sheet of Water (our stocked lake) over the last few days.  Youngsters are allowed use single barbless hooks on this stretch of water and boy they sure have been making hay while the sun shines.

Another special mention must go to a little fishing companion I had last Sunday – Yali is only 5 years old but that didn’t stop him from catching 2 lovely rainbow trout on his 1st fishing expedition – well done Yali!
The Sheet of Water is a more forgiving stretch of water and is perhaps more suited to the beginner / improving angler and it is far more sheltered than the Rye Lake which helps with anyone brushing up on casting technique.  Fishing on the Sheet of Water is only permitted when with a guide.

Go fishing…

A day permit is €50.  Anglers should note that this means they can fish for brown trout on the Rye Lake, brown trout on the Rye Water and rainbow trout on the Sheet of Water (all fly only) in this timeframe – so if one is not working the other might.
