Day 1

In a thrilling peg-to-peg battle, Carl Blurton (Maver) came up just 70g short of winning Bunerky Lake after netting some big bream. Drawn peg 13, Carl netted some fish pushing 4lbs to run neighbour Rob Wootton very close.
Shimano/Dynamite Baits backed Rob kept fish coming for most of the match, but had a real golden spell of 12 fish in 30 minutes around 3 O’Clock. Slipping the net under skimmers from 12oz to nearly 2lb, Rob finished up with 28.700kgs from peg 12 to get the current UK Champs’ week off to a flying start.

Rob, who also had some hybrids of 6-8oz stamp said “they are nice fish to catch, but I would rather have skimmers going into the net.”
Rob takes pole position in the Daiwa Cup.
Heather Humphreys was interested to see how Rob Wootton had caught his fish. The VIP party stayed chatting for nearly an hour at peg 12

World Pairs - Scene

Day 2

Flat calm conditions and bright sunshine made for difficult fishing almost everywhere on Day Two of the LAIW World Pairs Angling Champs.
On Airport section of Lower Lough Erne, Garbolino Ireland World Feeder silver medallist, Frances McGoldrick and half of the 2013 3rd placed paring, Paul Keeley, spent most of the match involved in banter about who had the edge. Both men were casting short of the drop-off and looking to pick up as many small roach and perch as possible.
There were a few bonus fish to be had, but the day was one of just keep dropping something into your net.
Casting just past the weed was the plan for Airport on Day Two. There were plenty of fish in and around the cover, and they could be tempted out on the feeder cast to 40m.
Bunches of red maggots alternated with a couple of bits of worm picked off fish for all the competitors in the section. 2012 Daiwa Cup winner, Frances McGoldrick use a cage feeder with a 60cm 0.16mm hooklength tied to a size 12 hook. “This peg is a bit shallower than the others to my left,” he said. “I put on a cage feeder to let the bait empty out quicker.”
It certainly worked, as he picked off some nice net perch and a bonus roach of close to 1lb.
On peg 12, Paul Keeley was also working hard to bring small roach and perch back from his 40m line. Standing to crank them hard, he managed to keep most out of the copious weed that sheltered the fish. A nice hybrid and some bigger perch helped Paul to record 6.100kgs when the scales arrived. That stayed top weight until Frances’ peg, when the Ballyconnell rod dropped his fish into the weigh net.
6.100kgs was the call and the banter about who had the most fish stopped.

World Pairs - Scene 2

Day 3

Connolly’s Shore on Garadice Lake has seen a few decent weights coming out over the last few days, with small fish on the pole, or skimmers and hybrids on the tip. Fiona Beeby drew peg 4 on Day Three and decided to only set up two feeder rods so she could go all out for bigger fish.
A Daiwa Matchwinner 12′ was her main choice, with a Porky Pig as back-up. Feeder Tension 0.10mm braid on a Daiwa Sweepfire reel plus a 6lb Maxima shockleader completed the casting duties.
While many associate chopped worm with Irish skimmer fishing, Fiona chose to only introduce casters and hemp as feed.
“I’ve travelled to the World Pairs with my husband Stephen every year, but this is the first time I’ve fished and I’m loving it. All the lads I’ve fished against have been very helpful and the stewards on each section are superb. They help carry kit, and when I had a health problem yesterday, they were on hand to assist. The stewards here knew I had been in trouble yesterday and were extra vigilant. What a great event.”
The mix was Sensas Lake and Gros Gardons, darkened with some Tracix black. Casting a medium cage feeder out to 40m, she was quickly into fish. A worm and red maggot hookbait picked off skimmers and hybrids steadily for the first 90 minutes.
Using a Tubertini Serie 18 in size 12, tied to 0.16mm Silstar Matchteam allowed the West Drayton (out of Sheffield) girl to hustle fish towards the net while others suffered pike attacks.
A better bream suggested a real bonanza could be about to happen, but like all other anglers in the section, Fiona had a slow hour mid-match. The ripple that had been on the lake all day dropped, and the cloud cover lifted to give way to strong sunshine again. The last two hours of the match became a case of scratching for a few bites.
German star Rudiger Hansen on peg 8 bucked the trend and had a strong last 30 minutes to thank for another lake win. Realising he needed some extra fish, Rudiger put out three quick casts with a lot of finely chopped worm in and swapped from triple red maggot to a large piece of worm on the hook. His 13kg helped keep him in the hunt for the Daiwa Cup.
