Richie Ryan reports that the bass tracking has continued apace in Cork Harbour of late…

Dr Tom Doyle heard a report that a certain guide had managed to catch and release six bass from a local area last week. The tagging team went to that shore mark the following day and landed and tagged five bass in total. The fish were named John,  Cian, Fintan and Colman Ryan and Taylor Russell. Members of the Cork Harbour Angling Hub have been busy catching and tagging bass this week also and in fact have exceeded the total for last year already. Dr Tom Doyle, ably assisted by Damian Haberlin, are impressed at the progress so far. Richie Ryan’s team of Kevin Mc Loughlin and himself are ahead after two shore outings with 9 bass tagged and returned. Jim Clohessy’s boat team have 6 fish transmitting after two boat outings.

Richie with a really impressive near specimen bass ready for tagging

And just like Jim ,well nearly, the Eire Bass guide managed to bag a near specimen bass called Ollie after his brother in America. In addition Flo and Gerard (Ryan)were named amongst this weeks batch and Killian ( Mc Loughlin) also has a bass swimming around Cork Harbour with his named after him. Unfortunately one bass was too small to tag.

The tagging team hard at work

The project has been a great success overall with the anglers and the UCC team showing great commitment and dedication. We have a good return on fish tagged last year as believe it or not the batteries last that long ! So when the data is compiled and published it should make very interesting reading for all anglers. As Kevin Mc Loughlin says, ” it just goes to show that catch and release does really work”.
