Mike Dennehy, skipper of the charter board Silver Dawn reports on some wonderful albacore tuna fishing they encountered on Sunday 28 September…
We departed Kinsale in nice, calm conditions. When on the tuna grounds we deployed a selection of surface and sub surface lures. It took no more than 15 minutes for the first fish to take James Walsh’s plug! This fish was a fine 50lb specimen, a huge fish probably the second heaviest taken on rod and line in ireland at that time.

Next up was Rob Vaughan with a nice 30lb specimen.

Then all hell broke loose as an obviously larger tuna proceeded to empty one of my reels of line after an agonising 30 minutes and some heart stopping moments my new personal best and boat record finally hit the deck an impressive 63lbs a whisker under the Irish record

After a brief respite Albie O’Sullivans rod bent double as another large fish stripped line off the heavy clutch. This fish Albie expertly subdued and it went 45lbs when it was weighed eventually.
Tight lines
