Wicklow Boat Charter’s keep clocking up the fish this season, skipper Kit Dunne reports on a hectic session on Spurdog with a few close to Specimen size.

Setting out on Sunday the Tide was showing a 4.1 to 0.6 so I wasn’t expecting too much from the day, perhaps a good hour or two over slack. I set off for a deep water mark about 4 mile off and prepared for a hard flood run to start the day.

Anchor set and we piled on the bait to give a good burst of scent to start the day, Mackerel, Squid, Lamprey and Herring baits were presented on 5/0 hooks. It wasn’t long before one of my guests, Don Garcia had something bigger than a dog on, it was fighting hard, a definite Spur. One in and the pressure was off, we fished on and had a few more in the run, including a couple of bite offs so we upped the trace to 150lb.

As tide eased we got more and more Spur up to 12lb, Paul Kirwin landed a fine fish of about 10lb while Don had the best of the day at 11.9lb and 104cm long, a near specimen. Geoff Hammond was only out for one thing, A SPUR, one would do as he needed it to bring his species tally to an impressive 16 this year. Geoff is leading the Wicklow Boat Charters Species Competition and is in line for the customised rod prize. He didn’t stop at one and landed over a dozen.

We had a cracking day with over 50 Spur in 3 hours all returned alive, a rally of Whiting on an inshore mark and a few poorcod, and we still had time for 2 cups of Tea.
