Charter skipper Donie Geary reports on deep sea fishing for his clients outside the Cork Harbour area from his base in Cobh.
35 lb. Conger
Just finished 4 days with Mike Smith and members of his family who have been staying at “Loughcarrig” and fishing with Brian on “lagosta” for a number of years. We had great plans to fish for shark and try a bit of wreck fishing but the tail end of hurricane Bertha put paid to most of our plans.on Saturday we left East Ferry in beautiful sunshine and completely calm seas, we opted to start with a selection of edible fish to take back to Dublin, going about 2 miles South West …of Daunt buoy we landed a share of medium pollack and quite a number of codling most of which we returned as maybe one in six were keepers, in the afternoon we went East to the whiting ground and finished up with nearly a box of very good edible fish.  On Sunday we went east to Ballywilling rocks and had a very enjoyable day of good conger to 35 lb. ling (small) and pollack mainly on the gills to 8 lb. but during the day the wind freshened from the South West and we had to battle the 8 miles back to Roches Point.  On Monday we ventured outside to 3 miles. South of the point and fishing from anchor we had pollack, ling, pouting, dogs and conger before things got to rough and we had to return to the shelter of the Harbour.  On Tuesday morning when we got to the mouth of east ferry all we could see was white water, this meant a day in the harbour, but this proved to be the most enjoyable day of the four, we landed altogether 19 species including Plaice, Dabs, Grey, Red, and Tub Gurnard and Thornbacks.  Also included was a Dab of 1.6 lbs. which if brought ashore would have been a specimen but Paul being the sportsman that he is returned it alive.
