Galway Buccaneers SAC report:

Congratulations to Steve Turner on winning leg 4 of the 2015 Galway Buccaneers SAC Master Boat Angler competition sponsored by Galway Bay Fishing. It was an overcast day with drizzle that cleared only as we passed the Foul Sound, with South Eastely winds that changed direction to the West combined with the slack enough tidal movements on the day made fishing difficult as the boat was tossed about.

With a stop to pick up mackerel, It was obvious that fishing was going to be good, mackerel were coming aboard the Maighdean Mara thick and fast and Dave Spokes picking up a non counting pollock as the competition hadn’t started.

Conor Graham was the first off the mark followed by Steve and Noel with pollock.

Galway Buccaneers SAC - July 2015 1With both Noel and Conor picking up Cuckoo Wrasse it was anyone’s game.

A second drift in deeper water saw lines dropped 60+ meters, fish were coming aboard in numbers and good sizes, it was evident by the struggle Steve was having that it was a very good fish, after much panting and sweating  the fish was landed and indeed it was a lunker of a Cod,  weighing at  12lbs it was accompanied by a Pollock weighing in at around 7lbs. Steve managed to take the lead with constant double hits of Pollock and a couple more Cod, while Conor and Noel managed to land Ling, even though still a close game Steve was able to pull ahead with a Grey Gurnard and a Haddock, all the while Noel was also picking up species with Poor Cod and Pouting.

Galway Buccaneers SAC - July 2015 3Galway Buccaneers SAC - July 2015 2With winds slowly picking up we moved closer to the island for a bit of shelter and John managed to pick up a couple of Dogfish, around this time Eoin (non member) started to look less green and start fishing for about half an hour before we pulled up to Inis Oirr to sample the skipper Kevin MacGabhann’s brew which was being served on the island.
Over all 11 species were caught, these include Pollock, Coalfish, Cod, Haddock, Ling, Cuckoo Wrasse, Poor Cod, Pouting, Grey Gurnard, Lesser Spotted Dogfish and Mackerel.

Cheers !
