Brian McCall from IrishKayakAngling.com reports that the waters off Kerry’s shores is a haven for kayak anglers…

James from Kerry, and a friend made the best of day’s fishing on the water at short notice. A small window of opportunity with settled water and calm conditions seen them both head for west Kerry and get some fish up from the depths. The plan was to try some single hook ledgered rigs with frozen mackerel. Arriving at the launch site things were looking good.

As it turned out the conditions were perfect as the two lads were nearing a huss per cast. Mackerel were also showing in small numbers as were dogfish. But it was the huss that won the day.

Elsewhere in the Kingdom…
On the same weekend ,not a long drive from where James was fishing, another 3 members of www.irishkayakangling.com were also out taking advantage of the settled conditions near Valentia island. Ian, his father Mark and Pat were also confident of catching, especially as a deep feature they intended to fish was approachable due to the settled sea. Fishing methods like to the two others, they used ledgered rigs baited with frozen and freshly caught mackerel and were catching the odd dogfish. Ian decided to move in to the rock faces to try for conger using similar tactics and using a mackerel head he dropped his line into a likely area. It wasn’t long until he got some interest and waited for a convincing take before striking. After a very hard battle this is what surfaced.

A word of warning. Conger eel are a tough fish to handle and great care should be exercised especially when unhooking from a kayak. Unhook the eel in the water where possible to avoid any injury.

Not long after Pat was into a very hefty huss. Ian also made a very enjoyable video of the weekends action and is well worth a look…
