Settled conditions see a return to small boat cod fishing at Cork Harbour

Richie Ryan reports on the cod fishing in Cork Harbour which has seen an upturn in activity as settled conditions allows boats to get out on the water…

There are still reports coming in of good cod fishing in Cork Harbour. Eire Bass guide Richie Ryan reports on an outing with friends Jacques Bronkhorst and Kevin Mc Loughlin at the weekend. Kevin persisted with the fly using Oz Goldsmith’s Baitfish patter which proved successful. The Doc and Richie used soft plastics which had the edge on this occasion, mainly due to the depth of the water.

Having had a pleasant outing in the winter sun Richie handed his boat over to his son Cian to share in the good fortune of the return of the cod after a few scarce years. Cian brought out good friend Sean Mc Shane who stuck to using bait until he saw Cian hockeying cod on soft plastics. A swift change of tactics ensured both anglers had a very productive few hours. We think Sean might make a tackle change on future outings !
