Stefan Martin from Killybegs Mariners SAC reports on how May fished in around Donegal Bay…
The month of May is usually the kickstart for angling around Donegal Bay and this one didn’t disappoint either. With sea temperatures rising all the time now, despite the damp conditions, the fishing has been great and the coming of the rays has top rod bending action from the shore. Thornbacks, spotted rays and cuckoo rays have all fallen to fish baits and we got lots of photographs of fish being caught and released from our members.
There was also some cracking flatty fishing with turbots and dabs and plaice aplenty from the deeper sand marks. On the beaches our members are getting plenty of flounders which are moving back inshore along with some cracking sea trout. Once again, we got some great catch and release shots from out anglers.
Wrasse and pollack for the LRF lures keep the excitement going while waiting for bites on the distance rods.
With the world boat angling championships in Donegal Bay this summer it is looking really good already.
Tight lines,
Stefan Martin
