Frank Reilly reports that there were few anglers out over the last week in the cold and windy conditions, however those that took to the water reported very good fishing to duck fly with good hatches reported. Larry McCarthy from Corrib Angling Services www.corribangling.com reported excellent fishing, landing 42 trout over the last week to duck fly patterns and buzzers. Catch of the week from Corrib Angling Services went to ex-world champion Chris Ogborne, England, with 7 trout for 21.5lbs with the best fish at 5lb 1oz.
The Oughterard 50 2-day annual team competition was held on Saturday 28th March as Sunday was cancelled due to high winds. 44 anglers landed 76 trout for 54.17kgs. 1st place went to Toby Bradshaw and Eugene Mc Carthy, Galway, with 7 trout for 8.45kgs. 2nd was Darren Maguire from Co. Fermanagh and Jean Haran N.I. with 5 trout for 5.16kgs. 3rd was John Maguire and Kevin Curran, Fermanagh, with 5 trout for 4.50kgs. Best fish of the competition went to Jean Haran with a trout of 2.36kgs. Elsewhere, Mike Faherty from Oughterard fished for 3 days and landed 12 trout for 20lbs. John Devine and a friend from Scotland fished from Oughterard for 4 days and landed 14 good trout, all released. With a spell of settled weather on the horizon, water temperatures should start to increase and we should see the start of the olive hatches soon.
