Waterford City and County Trout Angling Association PRO David Tantrum gives us some dates to pencil into our diaries and reports on how the excellent Waterford fisheries are doing after their Winter restocking:
Both Knockaderry and Carrigavantry have been stocked with rainbows to liven up the residents for the late season fishing. Carrigavantry has fished exceptionally well with fish on the surface. Knockaderry has suffered from poor water clarity, normal at this time of year, but it has not prevented the fish responding to a deeper fished fly.
Sunday saw a lovely 65cms long rainbow caught at Carrigavantry which was estimated to weigh 7 lbs.
Dates to look forward to….
- The Dick Doyle Competition is on Carrigavantry on Sept 27th and is for club members only.
- The Munster Bank Competition is at Carrigavantry on Saturday 17th Oct.
- The Knockaderry Cup is on the holiday weekend of the 24th and 25th and the final on the Monday 26th Oct.
Details will be posted well before the two open competitions. We have days available for club and corporate outings. Details from Michael Sheehan 086 1073086, who will front our stand at the Galway Fly Fishing Fair and our members will be only to pleased to answer your queries.
Thanks to the quality fish we bought from Andrew Golden at Roscrea we should have an average weight of around three pounds for the “off season”.

FLY FISHING ON KNOCKADERRY CARRIGAVANTRY BALLYSCANLON
Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore. The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet.Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!
Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.
New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.
