Angling guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports:

Last Sunday Lough Ennell trout Preservation association hosted the Lough Ennell Perpetual cup, and this was a very good entry for the popular fly-fishing competition sponsored by Con Hope. Fishing was from 11am-7pm and it never easy going on Ennell to entice a few trout to surface feed. The Morning arrived bright and there was only a slight breeze as we headed out from Whitebridge Bay. The Boats scattered to all corners of Ennell and I settled into a long drift from Rinn Point drifting towards Belvedere.

I was very lucky to move into a few big slicks as the wind dropped to near calm conditions, and met a few Ennell trout up on the surface. I covered 3 feeding fish but never interested them, then all of a sudden I got a savage take just below the surface on a small wet Murrough tied by Owen Mc Enteggart of Dundalk & District Trout & Salmon anglers who is a regular angler to Mullingar. Its was a cracking Ennell trout and weighed 3.116lbs, which was good enough to take Top Rod. Tullamore Angler Conor Lynch finished 2nd with another lovely fish of 2.228lbs, John Brennan Longford 3rd with 2.058lbs, and 4th Mullingar angler Ciaran Newman 2.036lbs.

Con Hope along with his Grand daughters Alison, Eleanor, and Eadaoin Quinn were out for the presentation along with friend Maria Moreno. Con and Eleanor presented the prizes, and John Tyrrell of L.E.T.P.A. thanked Con and his daughter Lorraine who could not make the presentation for sponsoring the competition. I had a great chat with Con at the presentation and was delighted to see him out for the presentation, as I fished for years with Con and actually won the Cup back in 2004.Ennell Anglers are back in action on Sunday September 20th with top prize the O, Malley Cup. More on this and fish catching Ennell flies drop into David O, Malley Angling Center in Dominick Street.
