Mick Flanagan tells us Owel fished well last week given the conditions…
The Fagan Lads from Multyfarnham had a cracking few hours on Owel during the recent fine weather. Martin senior and Martin Junior had some lovely trout on the troll. As you can see from the photographs the lads were basking in the brilliant sunshine.
The lake is producing some lovely trout of late, and the recent Ace Cup was won by well-known Mullingar angler Johnny O’Malley with a trout of 1.285kg. Niall Oakes finished 2nd with 1.205kg, 3rd was Brendan Murray with 1.075kg, and 4th in the senior section was Hubert Smith 0.990kg.
Juvenile winner was James Mahedy 0.590kg. It was tough going according to L.O.T.P.A. Secretary Stan McKeown as anglers had to fish with a sharp east wind, and very bright conditions. Forty-five anglers competed, and 29 anglers returned 45 trout.
This coming Sunday May 3rd Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association will host the J.O, Malley Cup. Fishing from 11am-6pm.Its certainly a busy few weeks for Owel, and on Sunday May 10th the Leinster Championships take place. Check –in Tullaghan shore fishing 1-am-6pm.
