Trout Fishing got off to a flying start on Lough Conn with the capture of a beautiful 8 lbs. brownie by local youngster Fearghal Reape. The fish was caught off the shore at Knockmore and several smaller ones were also released.
Meanwhile on the other side of the lake, at Errew Point, Dublin based angler, Sean Goulding, had a nice 1¼ lbs. fish on a fiery brown bumble.
Several boats ventured out from Cloghans Bay. Amongst them were Peter Roche and Joe McBride from Dublin who accounted for a trout each of 1 ½ and 1 ¼ lbs. respectively. There were a few smaller fish also reported.
Gary Binley from Foxford also enjoyed a successful opening day on Lough Conn with one good fish of 1 ½ lbs. at the Pontoon end of the lake.
Conventional wisdom would always have indicated that Conn tended not to fish well when water levels were significantly higher than seasonal norms. However, with the lake over 1 meter above these levels, a few trout anglers are nonetheless enjoying successful trips in the early days of the season. If only the weather would settle down, many more eager anglers would be keen to kick off the 2016 trout angling season on Lough Conn.
