Some of the Naas and District Anglers club members travelled to Newry at the weekend to fish the canal. Edie Long, NADA PRO reports…
Moloney and McLoughlin headed north to Newry today. Mark had purchased some new poles and there was so much carbon kit in it that the lads at nasa want to negotiate with him. After a “healthy” start in the Full Irish Cafe and a roadside deal done with rising star Matthew Crowl, the 2 angling addicts headed to Jack Smith’s for a Loughs Agency licence which was £3.50 for a 3 day permit.

Down at the canal the lads quickly set up of a pair of whips and they were off to a flying start. Although both anglers were whip fishing they approached it very differently. Mark opted for the traditional approach of Groundbait caster and maggot while Paul took an old school approach of liquidated bread and bread punch, fishing 5mm punch on a size 20 hook.

The results were interesting. The bread seemed to pick up the better stamp but the rebaiting time for a missed bite and each fish paid is toll on the scales at the end.

Joining the lads during the day was junior angler Eoin Rogers. This young lad has a great future in Irish angling. He had never fished bread punch before but didn’t need to be shown twice as he was like a duck to water with the method.
Anyway with nearly 30 lb of fish Mark tipped three balance in his favor and that of the traditional maggots and groundbait approach. Paul felt that the rebaiting time with the bread cost him the 3lb he needed to catch Mark.
Many thanks to Geoff Quinn for good directions and help and to Eamon and Steve and Neil for the company.
