A bright day at Daingean on the Grand Canal

Naas and District Anglers summer league 1st round took place in Daingean on Sunday 22nd May. We all met up in the Castlebarna golf club for a spot of brekkie before the match. We had a wonderful turnout of 23 anglers for the match, a couple of which are new members of the club, Conor Browne, Frankie Larkin and Mick Carter, you are all very welcome to our club!

Padraig took registration for the league and we had and optional pools of €5 just to make things a little more interesting. At 9:30am the draw took place, 3 sections were to be fished on the town stretch and an additional section at Millennium bridge had to be added due to the large number anglers attending the match.

The weather had promised us some heavy showers and possibly some thunder and lightning at some stage but at the start of the match conditions were great, nice and warm, very little wind and the canal was chocolate brown. Things looked good.

The all in was called at 11:30am and we all set about catching some fish and enjoying the match. I fed a line at 13m at 10 o’clock and 2 o clock and a short line at 9m. Unfortunately there wasn’t a touch on either 13m line and I could only get the odd fish laying in my dropper rig at 9m. I had a few small roach and a few perch but with rumours circulating that tench were being caught at either end of the stretch my few fish just wouldn’t cut the mustard. I did have the odd skimmer but they were tiny and with and hour to go without seeing my float dip I decided to adjust it. Low and behold I hooked something that felt a far better stamp than any previous fish I’d had but alas after about two seconds it came off the hook and on retrieval of my rig I noticed the bream slime on about the bottom two inches of hook length. Blast!!! There was only one thing for it, get the chopped worm into my 9 meter line and hope for the best. The chocolatey water colour at this point was rapidly becoming clear and things looked bleak but I slogged it out till the final shout at 4:30 and didn’t manage to catch a single fish in that time. Oh well, that’s fishing!
