Lindsey Clarke reports from Owenea Fishery – Monday 11th to Sunday 17th July 2016.
There were some good water levels over the week with floods on Monday (0.36m), Wednesday (0.24m), Friday (0.48m) and Saturday (0.26m). The gauge average for the week was good, reading 0.27 metres. The river was busier with 62 visiting rods in attendance. The river fished very well this week and there were some 50 salmon caught. Given here are some of the catches taken from the fishery Catch Register. On Monday, Henry Patterson recorded an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner form beat 9. Donal McMenamin reported a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 6. Finn McCrory logged a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 5 and Shane McCole accounted for 3 grilse weighing 4, 5 & 6lb caught on a spinner from beat 6.
On Tuesday, Billy Blair recorded a 2lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9. Davy Arbuckle reported a 3lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 9. James Compston logged a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7. Finn McCrory registered a 4½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8 and Michael McCrory accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8. On Wednesday, Michael McLaughlin recorded a 4½lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 6. Davy Arbuckle reported a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8. Alan Mooney logged a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7. Henry Patterson registered a 7lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 8 and Fergal Mallon accounted for 4 grilse weighing 3, 4, 5 & 5lb caught on a fly from beat 5 with 2 of these being released.
On Thursday, Alan Mooney recorded a 3½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7. On Friday, Federico Ortiz reported a 7lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 5 and Fergal Mallon accounted for a 4lb grilse caught and released on a fly from beat 5. On Saturday, Liam Faulkner recorded a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9. Raymond Crawford reported a 5lb grilse caught on worm from beat 8. Bryan Connolly logged a 5lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 9. Alan Watson registered a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9 and Billy Blair accounted for 3 grilse weighing 3, 3 & 6lb caught on a fly from beat 8 with the 2 smaller of these being released again. The forecast for next week is for warm and variable weather. Given some rain to provide floods, prospects look good for the coming week.
