Fishery manager Terry Gallagher reports on fishing for the week of 20 July – 03 August…

Water levels at Costello remained close to optimum as regular showers maintained the system in good order. John Maher and friends fished for 3 days and were very pleased with the 68 sea trout and 6lb salmon they notched up during their visit. Most of the sea trout caught were recorded as fresh, so the run continues!

Padhraic McDonagh fished the middle river where he landed 6 sea trout and commented that all the fish were in excellent condition and all fresh. Regular visitor Rene Lachemaer also fished river beats 2 & 3 and he too landed 6 sea trout.

Eamon O’Brien treated his grandchildren to an afternoon picnic on the famous “Rock Hotel” on Glenicmurrin. In between courses Eamon still managed an impressive 10 sea trout.  James Egan and Derek Veitch didn’t fare badly when they landed their 8 sea trout on Glenicmurrin.

 29/07/16 to 03/08/16

Unfortunately the salmon kept their heads down for the most part over the last week but not so the sea trout with some very notable catches recorded. Not least of which occurred when Robert Kelly and William Hamilton took a day on Glenicmurrin Lough and landed 24 sea trout, the best just under 2lbs 8ozs. What was even more remarkable is that this was their first time to fish the lake. They fished the upper lakes the following day catching a further 11 sea trout and lost a salmon.

Glenicmurrin fished consistantly well over the week with Eamon O Brien landing 16 sea trout and regular visitor Larry O Reilly 10. Pete Westwater returned for his annual visit to Glenicmurrin and notched up 13 sea trout. First time visitors, Dave Flynn & Andy Wojnicki were very happy with the 7 sea trout they caught as were brothers Richard and Hugh McGuire who recorded 8. Hugh was very unlucky not to add at least 1 salmon to his catch for the day after losing 2 fresh fish on River Beat 1 that evening.

Not that Glenicmurrin was the only star of the week as Muckinagh Lough produced 18 sea trout for a very pleased Eamon O Brien and Clogher Lough provided 16 fish for Sean Costello and Sean Bollustrum. After 2 relatively disappointing seasons for sea trout, 2016 is shaping up very nicely indeed.
