Ronan Cusack reports on a good week on Lough Mask:

Excellent fishing again this week on Lough Mask despite the freezing weather conditions. The car park in Cushlough was a hive of activity on Sunday morning   with anglers scrambling to get out on the lake, unfortunately by 3:00pm the shore-line was deserted, as an icy east wind swept across the Lake.

Despite the low temperatures, fly hatches have improved dramatically over the past week. Large hatches of small sedge, Duckfly and even the odd olive have been reported from all across the lake and trout taking full advantage.

Local angler Kevin Egan had 4 trout pulling wets on Friday last, in very blustery conditions (best fish 2lb). Gerry Moran from Ballinrobe fished on Saturday in warmer conditions and also finished with 4 (best fish 2lbs all returned). Denis Kelleher had 3 nice fish on Sunday on wet-flies in among the rocks (best fish 2lb). Eddy Gibbons and Simon Hughes from Tourmakeady had 4 fish for a few hours fishing on Friday afternoon (best fish 2.25lb all returned). Eddy also fished with Michael Shovelin for a day last week and they finished with 7 (best fish 1.75lb).

Forecasts for the coming week show our weather to improve, with less rain and an increase in air temperature, which should make things a little more comfortable on the lake.
