The Mountshannon Angling Club tells us that for the week ended 22/05/2016 a total of 66 trout were caught by club members in the Mountshannon area of Lough Derg. The anglers sportingly released 44 of these. Best fish for the week weighed 1.755 kg (3.87 lbs) and was caught by David Burke on the Spent. Ger Moroney memorial was won by David Lyons with a fish weighing 1.640 kg (3.62 lbs) also caught on the Spent.
Fishing near by, off Holy Island was Scarriff angler Eamon Giblin who caught a fish of a lifetime on Saturday. A spectacular wild brown trout took a Spent at Dusk and fought for 45 minutes before it could be netted. The trout weighed in at 6lbs 14ozs and it truly is a once in a lifetime fish.
A little further south at Tinnnerana Bay there were good hatches of fly. On Monday 23 May, on angler reported steady hatches all day. The best of the fishing was in the afternoon, with classic stalking enjoyed. Through some exceptional skill he rose 11 fish. Of these 8 were to Green Fly and 3 to Spent later on. By applying break neck speed to the strike he missed every fish. Fortunately he will most likely get another chance as the fishing continues to be productive enough.
