Marlene Mc Laughlin reports from Cashel Trout Fishery:
Unsettled weather conditions have not been a deterrent to anglers at Cashel this weekend. Dungiven’s Stephen McLaughlin bagged one which weighed 2lb 2ozs while Raymond Pollock (Portstewart) bagged three weighing 7lb 5ozs. Ian Millar and Andrew Logan (Dungiven) released five trout between them which took little buzzers. Danny Walker and Jim Russell (Monkstown and Newtownabbey) bagged three weighing 9lb which took the Walker special and the Peter Ross wet fly. These two anglers released three others and lost quite a few too. Tommy Reilly (Maghera) accompanied by his son Daniel had a great evening bagging three weighing 10lb with the heaviest weighing in at 4lb 6ozs. Jim Hasson (Derry) released four while Dungiven’s John Hasson caught and released similar numbers using small lures.
Belfast anglers, Jim Patterson, Billy Kirk, Rob McFarland and Ivan Thompson released a total of 21 trout between them some of which were estimated to be into the double figures. John Millard (Derry) was delighted to catch his first ever trout on the fly, two in fact, which weighed 5lb. Derry’s Aidy Askin bagged two for tea which weighed 5lb 3ozs and released four more which fell to the Connemara black, the Greenwell’s glory and the cove pheasant tail nymph. Jim Hasson (Derry) released four trout which all took the wee dry flies. Jim Russell and Danny Walker (Monkstown) bagged four weighing 13lb 10ozs and also released one and lost four which fell to the Walker Special dry fly. Daniel Reilly (Maghera) bagged two, released two. His trout for home weighed 6lb 10ozs.
Joe Convery and John Francis Bradley (Draperstown) had a lovely evening catching a few trout one of which Joe kept for tea. Billy Ferguson (Derry) released around ten over two short days which weighed an average of 3lb. Michael Anderson (Antrim) released a couple also which took small nymphs.
Derry’s Ciarn and Sean Kelly used their favourite patterns to bank a couple while Jason Seaman and David Watson also from Derry released six in total which took wee egg flies and buzzers. John Hasson and Martin Bradley released five and two respectively. Joe McGuigan (Draperstown) and Jonathan Selfridge (Maghera) banked a couple each which took orange cat’s whisker. Conan Gallagher, Eddie Manthorpe, Kevin Gallagher, Danny McDonaghue and Seamus Cusack were all on catch and release tickets. Each one hooked at least a couple of trout each which took their favourite lures and nymphs.
Extremely well done to all!
